Save Australian Shellfish Reefs

Target: The Honourable Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia

Goal: Preserve and protect Australian oyster reefs.

Australia’s oyster reefs are nearly extinct, having declined 99% since British colonization of the continent. Studies have shown that, due to the over-harvesting of shellfish and various pollution, only seven oyster reefs remain, a stark reduction from the hundreds that used to exist. This near-extinction is considered an even more dire situation than the Great Barrier Reef’s decline.

We cannot let these oyster reefs continue to decline. They are a vital ecosystem on their own, providing filtration to over 100 liters of water per day and increasing the local fish production. The oceans are in dire straits without these reefs, as are the oyster species they are home to. Worse, these natural structures have been disappearing unnoticed for decades, half of them having vanished before the current adult population was even born; the world barely knew they existed until now.

Restoration projects are currently being funded; however, this will be a slow and painstaking process. Furthermore, we must make pollution and over-harvesting of oysters a thing of the past to ensure a brighter future for the reefs. Sign this petition to aid in the restoration and protection of oyster reefs.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Turnbull,

Australian oyster reefs are disappearing rapidly due to over-harvesting and pollution, with only seven remaining of what used to be hundreds. These reefs are a vital ecosystem, filtering up to 100 liters of water per day and converting toxins into a safe food source for local fish. Despite getting little attention compared to the also-critical Great Barrier Reef, these reefs are in a far more dire situation.

You must not only aid in the recently-funded restoration efforts of these oyster reefs, but enforce stronger laws against pollution and over-harvesting to protect the new reefs being formed. We cannot lose this ecosystem, especially with the ocean in peril due to many other factors.

Sincerely,

  2. In college, I remember hearing a lot about reefs in an Ecosystem class. They provides homes to hundreds if not thousands of species and they also provide many benefits to humans. Let’s do better.
