Stop Tourist Destination’s Abuse of Elephants

Target: Apar Kewkacha, President and Director of Safari World

Goal: Demand a tourist hotspot end the exploitation and everyday abuse of its elephants.

Thailand’s tourist attraction Safari World made numerous headlines for its controversial orangutan boxing show, but the lightning-rod organization’s callous treatment of elephants cannot go unacknowledged. Every day, elephants trudge around the park in sweltering heat and heavy, oppressive chains—and this is the least of the abuses. They are forced to dance, paint, play sports, and perform circus acts in a grueling show that runs all day, nearly every day of the year. The ‘star attraction’ of these shows involves forcing the elephants to walk across a razor-thin, sharp wire for the entertainment of passing spectators. Guests posing for photos with the elephants have described them as bewildered at best and miserably unhappy at worst.

The treatment of elephants at Safari World unfortunately represents a larger trend in Thailand, where cutbacks on logging have stripped from elephant owners one major source of profit. Now, many elephants are essentially farmed out to often unscrupulous trainers who will use any means necessary to ‘teach’ these animals tricks of the trade. In 2015, an elephant threw, trampled, and gored a tourist in front of the man’s young daughter during an elephant ride. Reports later confirmed this elephant’s involvement in a training camp accused of animal cruelty; onlookers had previously witnessed the elephant being ‘encouraged’ with a sharp spear-like object.

Sign this petition and demand Safari World ensure the welfare and well-being of its elephants and all of the animals it has introduced to the world.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Kewkacha,

Animals are your livelihood, and as such you have an honor and a duty to protect them, shelter them, and most of all respect them. Never lose sight of the fact that each of your occupants is more than just a commodity—it is a living being. As Thailand is renowned for its Asian elephants, you hold a particularly special obligation to these animals that have become an unofficial representative of your country.

Experts on elephants recognize the dangers of subjecting these animals to undue hardship because elephants, especially males, become unpredictable and even dangerous in overheated conditions. You must keep these lessons in mind when training and handling these beautiful but mysterious creatures. Otherwise, your tourist haven will become just another statistic in a preventable tragedy.

We urge you to take a hard assessment of your training methods and your show content. Do not overwork these animals, and do not subject them to inhumane practices such as tightrope-walking. Treat these animals as the wondrous beings they are, for their sake and for the sake of guests who simply want to stand in awe of nature’s wonder.

Sincerely,

  1. May everyone involved in Safari World, including all moronic tourists who PAY for/fund this torture, be one day captured by equally-evil aliens, who keep them just as enslaved for THEIR ‘entertainment’ for the rest of their sorry lives. No mercy is deserved by these kinds of ‘people.’

  2. The abuse of these poor elephants,is beyond the abuse of at living and loving creature. Can’t safari world come up with a better way to entertain, there sorry excuse of life.

  3. As more and more people learn about the suffering that goes behind the scenes of animal circuses, the less people want to participate in them. Let’s end this!

  4. END THE ABUSE OF THE GREAT ELEPHANTS HERE NOW.

  5. WILD ANIMALS SUFFER WELFARE ABUSE IN CRUEL WILDLIFE ATTRACTIONS. ELEPHANTS ARE TAKEN FROM THEIR MOTHERS WHEN YOUNG, THEN ISOLATED, BEATEN, AND STARVED UNTIL THEIR SPIRITS ARE BROKEN. EXPLOITING ANIMALS FOR ENTERTAINMENT IS UNFORGIVABLE! IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE AND WE NEED TO EVOLVE!
