Prevent Senseless Animal Shooting by Licensing Air Guns

Target: Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Stop senseless animal slaughter by requiring licenses for air guns.

In the UK, animals are being senselessly shot and injured or killed by individuals who own air guns, which do not require a license. Most recently, an individual wielding an air gun targeted a sweet black cat named Tinkerbell. An x-ray of Tinkerbell’s injuries revealed that her hind leg was completely smashed by an air gun pellet, making her part of a shocking statistic about animals injured or killed by these guns.

The RSPCA reports that animals are shot with air guns every few hours. Over the last five years, the RSPCA has recorded about 4,500 reports of animals injured or killed by air guns. In 2017 alone 519 birds, 341 cats, 125 wild mammals, and 111 dogs were shot. Although Northern Ireland and Scotland have passed laws that regulate these weapons, in both England and Wales you do not have to have a license to own an air gun.

David Bowles, the RSPCA assistant director of external affairs, said: “The RSPCA has long been calling for stricter controls over air guns as well as better education and explanation of the law for those buying one. Our 24-hour cruelty hotline receives hundreds of calls every year reporting air gun attacks on animals. Animals can suffer horrendous injuries and often die as a result of air gun attacks and these weapons are potentially extremely dangerous for people as well.”

Sign this petition to urge Theresa May to pass laws that require licensing for individuals who wish to purchase and own an air gun.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister May,

Individuals that own air guns are targeting animals both domesticated and wild at an alarming rate. Recently, an individual with an air gun shot a beloved pet cat named Tinkerbell. This resulted in a totally shattered rear leg for the cat but no justice for the shooter. Unfortunately, this situation is far too common in both Wales and England where air guns are not regulated by licensure. The RSPCA repots that animals are shot with air guns every few hours. In 2017 alone, 519 birds, 341 cats, 125 wild mammals, and 111 dogs fell victim to shooting attacks with air guns.

While Northern Ireland and Scotland have passed regulations dealing with the ownership and use of air guns, Wales and England have not. The senseless shooting of animals must stop and I urge you to require licenses for air guns in both Wales and England.

Sincerely,

  2. This is why guns eventually need to be registered; which will ultimately lead to confiscation.
    Calm down you idiots.

    • BAN AIR GUNS,THEY HAVE NO USE

    • Maybe YOU’RE willing to wait until “eventually” and “ultimately,” after countless MORE animals are shot, but the rest of us aren’t. So take your patronizing and contemptuous “calm down,” and shove it.

    • “Eventually”?? Obviously you’ve never owned an animal injured by an airgun. While living in Glos my young whippet developed a limp: our vet found an airgun pellet causing an abscess in his forechest. Only explanation-my friendly little guy had been shot in our own garden from the path behind our fence. Recovered after treatment… Luckier than the neighbour’s dear old cat who died soon afterwards from a direct shot in the eye by an airgun pellet while sunning himself on their front garden wall…Regulations needed NOW.

  3. WTF! With statistics as bad as these, it’s a no-brainer! If it were bloody HUMANS getting shot or killed, you BET there would be licensing in place already! The ‘good’ news is, UNTIL licenses are required, if you can find the SOB who shot your animal, YOUR airgun can’t be traced back to you either, and let’s just say, justice could be served.

    STOP THE BARBARISM..BAN THESE AIRGUNS!

  5. BAN THE AIRGUNS FROM KILLING THE GREAT CATS NOW.

  6. THOSE PUNKS SHOULD BE SHOT IN THE HEAD WITH REAL BULLETS, NOT PELLETS!

  7. THE HUMANS THERE SHOULD BE SHOT IN THE HEAD WITH BULLETS FOR SHOOTING AT ANIMALS.

  8. Get rid of these stupid air guns! They have no use in society except for sick scumbags who love to hurt animals.
