Protect Badgers from Senseless Unregulated Killing

Target: Shaun Sawyer, Chief Constable of the Devon and Cornwall Police

Goal: Uphold the Protection of Badgers Act.

The UK government has announced a cull of about 20,000 badgers in an attempt to reduce tuberculosis in bovine populations. Recently, it’s been suggested to suspend a law that protects badgers in the areas where they are to be culled. The police forces in Devon and Cornwall have suggested the suspension of the Protection of Badgers Act will help to prevent the spread of bovine tuberculosis while also easing pressure on resources. The Badger Trust, a protection and advocacy group, called the suggestion of the suspension appalling, claiming that it would lead to overhunting of badgers. The chairman of the group, Peter Martin, said, “This is them simply trying to make their role in policing the cull easier by allowing all and sundry to be out and about killing badgers in the cull zones. It would create a completely unregulated slaughter of wildlife.”

The Protection of Badgers Act protects the animals by threatening a fine or imprisonment to anyone caught taking, killing, or injuring badgers. Managing the cull has cost the police forces of Devon and Cornwall resources that were already affected by budget cuts. However, the cull of badgers must be regulated and carried out by professionals. Sign this petition to ensure that the police forces of Devon and Cornwall will continue to manage the cull of badgers by upholding the Protection of Badgers Act and preventing any and all citizens from hunting badgers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Constable Sawyer,

The badger cull that is happening in your district to prevent bovine tuberculosis has to be managed and regulated by the police force. Without management of this cull, the badger population could be severely injured by the careless acts of individuals who are untrained in culling this animal. The Protection of Badgers Act should be upheld to protect this animal and prevent an unregulated slaughter of wildlife. I urge you to insist on keeping the Protection of Badgers Act intact.

Sincerely,

  1. If farmers think badgers carry TB,then innoculate your cattle, you just have to spend some money, not murder innocent badgers.

  2. Stupid, colonial Brits. The badger is nearly extinct in AB, Canada because of idiot humans. LEARN something, will you?

  3. MAKE LAWS TO DEFEND THE GREAT BADGERS FROM BEING HUNTED NOW.
