Target: Marcie Moriarty, Chief Prevention and Enforcement Officer at the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Goal: Enforce the full penalty for the women who left more than 100 animals in unsanitary conditions without adequate food, water, shelter and veterinary care.

A mother and daughter in Vancouver, Canada are being charged with animal cruelty after it was discovered they had 18 horses, 18 dogs, 15 birds, two cats and 104 fish living in horrific and unsafe conditions. The areas where the animals were being kept were unsanitary and did not have any kind of sufficient shelter. There was also a lack of food or water, with many of the horses being found underweight and malnourished.

These inhumane living conditions combined with a lack of proper maintenance and veterinary care caused many of the horses to have a high level of parasites and their hooves were in terrible condition. The lack of maintenance and veterinary care was further shown by the medical and dental health issues of numerous other animals.

Fortunately, the animals were seized and have since been rehabilitated and moved to new homes. However, this kind of animal cruelty cannot be tolerated or allowed to continue. The full penalty for these acts of animal abuse includes five years in jail, a maximum fine of $75,000 and a lifetime ban on owning animals. These women need to face the consequences for their actions, and a clear message needs to be communicated that animal abuse will not go without major punishments.

Dear Chief Moriarty,

Recently, more than 100 animals were discovered living in horrific and unsanitary conditions without adequate food, water, shelter, maintenance and veterinary care. Many of the animals had awful medical problems and were malnourished and distressed.

I am extremely grateful that your team was able to rescue these animals, rehabilitate them and find them new homes. However, you said cases like this unfortunately aren’t that uncommon for the B.C. SPCA. Animal cruelty is a major issue that needs to be taken seriously and combatted with grave consequences. I urge you to enforce the full penalty against these women in order to communicate a clear message that animal abuse will not be tolerated.
