Ensure Maximum Punishment for Scotland’s Animal Abusers

Target: Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland

Goal: Send a strong message against animal cruelty by properly penalizing the guilty.

England has recently joined its neighbor Ireland — as well as Australia and Canada — in fortifying punishments against its worst animal abuse offenders. The promising action does not extend to fellow UK nations Scotland or Wales, however. Scottish government officials have made a public commitment to strengthen the nation’s animal cruelty laws. They must be held to this promise, which is a promise for the safety and wellness of all Scotland’s living beings.

Scotland should use the English law as a model for any future animal cruelty legislation. The newly enacted legislation corrects a critical gap in predecessor initiatives. Previously, cruelty laws administered a mere six-month maximum punishment for even the most egregious animal cruelty convictions. Despite thousands of documented charges of animal cruelty annually within the nation, a scant five on average received the maximum penalty. When the current revisions take effect, animal torturers and killers can receive a more fitting punishment of up to five years of prison time. Further, judges will have the ability to prevent these dangerous offenders from ever owning another animal. The law promises to curtail degrading practicing like organized dog fighting as well.

Since each member nation of the UK ultimately enacts is own animal cruelty laws, signing the petition below will send a strong message to the government of Scotland and other governments that reckless disregard for animals will not be tolerated anywhere in the world.

Dear Minister Sturgeon,

Twelve months: this is the current price paid by many in your country who exhibit a cruel indifference to life. In many cases, perpetrators of animal cruelty may not even see a day of jail time, or even a harsh fine. Worse yet, these offenders may one day inflict harm upon another animal entrusted to their care.

Your neighbor England recently set a positive and promising example of its commitment to all life. ensuring stronger safeguards for its animals via passage of an enhanced animal cruelty law. This new law punishes offenders with up to five years in prison, extensive fines, and unlimited bans on further ownership of animals. These measures not only deter horrible offenses like dog fighting, but on a more fundamental level they demonstrate a dedication to and an empathy for all living beings.

Your government recently made a similar pledge and commitment, We urge you to view the English law as a blueprint. Honor your commitment by strengthening the animal cruelty laws of Scotland and assuring justice and humane treatment for your animals.

  1. scotland makes laws to defend the great animals now.

  2. If that country is that barbaric, why not create harsher laws to punish animal cruelty? Higher fines and longer stays in jail … and no probation at all!
I still proclaim that ‘animals’ are better than ‘human beasts’!
