Save Greyhounds from Illegal Racing and Death

Target: Fernando Chui, Chief Executive of Macau

Goal: Rescue greyhounds from closed down racetrack.

Hundreds of greyhounds, mostly exported from Australia, live in notoriously bad conditions in Macau’s greyhound racing track, Yat Yuen. With the permanent closure of the track looming in July of this year, animal rights lobbyists in Macau are concerned about the welfare of these greyhounds.

The track is infamous for its poor treatment of racing greyhounds and high death rates. The greyhounds are reportedly kept in a concrete compound that is not temperature regulated, leaving the animals in scorching hot conditions. Many of the dogs are reported to have untreated skin conditions and injuries. It is estimated that about 650 greyhounds are kept at the Macau racetrack. Animal rights activists predict that when the Macau racetrack closes, these animals will either be killed or sent to underground racetracks in mainland China, where dog racing is illegal and not regulated.

The animal welfare group Anima is lobbying the government of Macau to get custody of these greyhounds so they are not further mistreated. Sign this petition to urge the government of Macau to protect these greyhounds by releasing them to Anima upon the closure of the racetrack in July.

Dear Chief Executive Chui,

Macau has a bad reputation of badly treating racing greyhounds. The US-based animal protection group Grey2K estimated that 383 dogs were put down in Macau in 2010. Greyhounds Australia banned the export of racing dogs to Macau in 2013 as a result of high death rates and poor conditions. The notorious Yat Yuen racetrack reportedly keeps its dogs in conditions that are far too hot and leaves skin conditions and injuries untreated. This is not an acceptable quality of life for these majestic animals.

This racetrack will be closed in July of this year, and the fate of 650 greyhounds will be in your hands. Without intervention, these greyhounds could end up being euthanized or shipped to racetracks in mainland, China where dog racing is illegal and not regulated by the government and conditions will likely be worse. However, with your help, the animal welfare group Anima could take up these dogs. This would allow the dogs to have a second chance at life, receive the health rehabilitation that they need, and ultimately be put up for adoption in loving homes. I urge you to secure the dogs from the Yat Yuen racetrack and put them in the care of Anima.

  4. Chief Chui, please use your authority to keep these unfortunate creatures well away from China. The chinese are the most mindless, cruel and evil people in the world. They have no feelings, no kindness or compassion, they eat anything that moves and torture and death is second nature to them. Please get these unfortunate animals somewhere they will be treated decently and given a chance to have a life. Thank you.
