Ban Captive Breeding of Orcas for Human Entertainment

Target: Richard Corcoran, Florida Speaker of the House of Representatives

Goal: Ensure that no company or marine park resume breeding orcas for shows in Florida by passing the Florida Orca Protection Act.

Future generations of orcas will no longer have to suffer life in captivity, being forced to perform at theme parks, if a new bill in Florida passes. The Florida Orca Protection Act, or HB 1305, would forbid captive breeding, the use of orcas as performers in theme shows, and the import and export of orcas. This will ensure that SeaWorld does not go back on its pledge to end captive breeding and its use of orcas in theatrical shows, and that no other company will resume such inhumane practices.

The bill was introduced by Representative Jared Moskowitz and is supported by the Animal Legal Defense Fund and Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC). California has already passed similar legislation, meaning that if this bill passes in Florida, orca captivity will be legally ended in two out of the three U.S. states where the whales are currently held. It would also send a strong message to other countries to follow suit, helping orcas across the world. Sign below to demand that this pivotal bill be passed into law.

Dear Speaker Corcoran,

It is vital to ensure that SeaWorld and all other Florida companies and marine parks ban the captive breeding and use of orcas for shows. The Florida Orca Protection Act, if passed, will forbid this mistreatment of innocent whales as well as banning the import and export of orcas in Florida, legally making sure that SeaWorld keeps its promise to end these practices and that all other companies follow suit.

This legislation would be a compassionate and humane victory in protecting orcas in Florida, and would also set an example for countries across the world. If passed, HB 1305 would save orcas from suffering in two of the three U.S. states where they are kept in captivity, turning the tides for their protection and preservation. I urge you to ensure that the Florida Orca Protection Act is passed.

  1. these beautiful creatures should be swimming in an ocean not in confined space like they’re in

  2. It’s all about money and greed.

  3. Here in the Puget Sound the numbers of Orca in our waters declines yearly. No one has the right to imprison any animal whatsoever for the “entertainment” of people and the filling of pockets of those who hold animals. Remember this only, coexistence not extinction.
