Save Wildlife from Cruel Traps

Target: Honorable Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources

Goal: Ban the use of cruel leghold traps in British Columbia

Leghold traps are cruel devices designed to hold an animal against its will. Many times, household pets and other untargeted species are caught in these traps and suffer harsh deaths due to predation or dehydration. Animals might also resort to self-mutilation, often attempting to chew off their own limbs in order to escape.

Today, trapping is largely fueled by the commercial fur industry–the ultimate goal of which is to obtain a ‘marketable pelt.’ There is no regard for the well-being of the animal that is caught. In fact, trappers are more concerned about any damage to the fur than anything else.

Unfortunately, there are currently no regulations in place that require signage for an area that has traps in it. In fact, these traps remain legal in every province and territory in Canada. Specifically, in British Colombia, it is legal to set a trap just 200 meters from a house or a school. Consequently, over the years, there has been an increase in the number of domestic animals caught in these devices.

This suffering cannot continue. Urge Steve Thomson, the Minster of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, to enact legislation today to end the use of these inhumane traps. This is essential to protect Canada’s wildlife and the public.

Dear Honorable Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources,

I urge you to enact legislation that will prohibit the use of leghold traps in British Columbia.

These devices are both cruel and inhumane. Fur trappers who set these traps have no concern for the well-being of the animals that are caught. Too often, these animals will die from dehydration or predation and many even resort to self-mutilation in an attempt to free their limbs.

Currently, there is no legislation that requires signage for an area with traps. Therefore, it is legal to set a trap just 200 meters from a public area, such as a school or house. This is an immediate threat to children and domestic pets that might wander near trap zones.

We must prevent this from happening. In order to protect and sustain Canada’s wildlife, it is essential to enact legislation today to end the use of these inhumane traps. I urge you to do so.
