Save Marine Life from Harmful Sonic Cannons

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Stop the use of underwater sonic cannons, which can deafen and kill marine mammals

President Barack Obama recently lifted a 30-year-old ban on the use of sonic cannons to search for oil and natural gas deposits in the ocean. These sonic cannons are 100 times more deafening than jet engines and can cause serious harm to whales, dolphins, and other marine life. As the well-being of our planet continues to decline due to government and corporate greed, now is definitely not the time to lift a ban on harmful sonic cannons for the sake of finding more oil.

Sonic cannons blast deafening sound pulses every 10 seconds, and the reverberations are used to create maps of the ocean floor. These maps could lead to depositions of natural gas and petroleum oil. However, these sound pulses can throw the natural functions of marine wildlife into disarray. Blasts can kill fish eggs and larvae, as well as disrupt whale mating, foraging, and migrating. Endangered right whales will be pushed even further down the slope toward extinction if sonic cannons are used in oil exploration.

The lifting of this ban stands in direct contrast to President Obama’s earlier proposal to make the Pacific Remote Islands National Marine Monument more than seven times larger, which would create the largest marine sanctuary in the world. Please urge President Obama to reinstate the three-decade-old ban on the use of sonic cannons that will devastate marine wildlife.

Dear President Obama,

Your past actions to protect marine wildlife are commendable. However, the lifting of the ban on the use of sonic cannons is in diametric opposition to your former preservative actions. These sonic cannons can cause serious damage to marine wildlife and disturb their natural life functions.

Whales, dolphins, fish, and other sea creatures will be negatively impacted by these sonic cannon sound pulses, which are 100 times more deafening than jet engines. I urge you to reconsider the lifting of the ban and protect marine wildlife instead of giving in to corporate oil interests.
