Ban Slaughter and Consumption of Dogs in Africa’s Evala Dog Eating Festival

Target: Faure Gnassingbé, President of Togo, Africa

Goal: Protect dogs and cats from brutal slaughter, and protect people from rabies, by forbidding consumption of dog meat.

Every year, thousands of teenage boys in Africa spend a week gorging on dog meat in isolation, and return the following week to continue consuming massive amounts of dog meat, culminating in ‘traditional initiation’ wrestling competitions known as Evala. The number of dogs slaughtered for this festival, because of the belief that eating the meat will endow the competitor with dog-like attributes, is unknown. However, thousands of boys across many different tribes must participate in the festival or face exile, so the count of slain animals would undoubtedly be staggering.

In addition to the cruelty to animals, this ritual presents another problem in rabies, which is widespread throughout Africa. There is no health check of cats or dogs prior to their slaughter for consumption, presenting a threat to locals as well as tourists. The organization Fight Dog Meat is calling for the Evala festival to continue embracing its traditions of wrestling performance and athleticism while doing away with the dangerous practice of eating dog meat. Sign below to demand that the slaughter and consumption of dog meat be banned.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Gnassingbé,

The practice of slaughtering dogs and eating their meat is cruel, as well as a significant health risk for humans. Countless dogs are killed and eaten every year for the Evala dog eating festival, and the practice must not continue.

Rabies is a widespread problem, threatening both locals and tourists, and cats and dogs are not checked before they are killed for their meat. The organization Fight Dog Meat has called for the Evala festival to ban the dangerous practice of slaughtering and consuming dogs, to instead enhance the traditional components of wrestling performance and athleticism, and even make the festival into a professional event. I urge you to respect and protect the well-being and health of both animals and people, and ensure that the slaughter and consumption of dog meat is banned.

Sincerely,

  7. Ginger Neimo says:

Over 25 million dogs die each year because humans feel a need to eat them. Just image then how many animals all in all are killed yearly. I eat cruelty free and have for over 30 years. I get told- oh but you have to eat meat other wise you will get sick, blah, blah, blah. Haha what a joke, as in sport it is them, not I who is getting tired, and they are younger than me, and my health is excellent. You do not need to eat meat to survive- vegans are a fact on that. All animals count- not just some.
