End Ivory Trade in United Kingdom

Target: Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Support a blanket ban on the ivory trade in the United Kingdom.

The ivory trade is close to being permanently banned in the United Kingdom. The issue has become a major political hot button as of late, mainly due to Lady Victoria Borwick of the British Antique Dealers’ Association losing an election following public outrage when she opposed a full ban. With enough political and social pressure, another country could help to end the ivory trade altogether.

Unfortunately, the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs’ consultation document still maintains exemptions from the ban, most notably antique dealers and their “continued sale of items containing ivory of artistic, cultural or historic significance.” These exemptions basically prioritize profit over the safety and preservation of elephants, whose numbers continue to steadily decline despite all efforts made to protect them. Even the slightest exception to the ivory ban is enabling the continued endangerment of the species.

We cannot allow even a single exception to a full ban on ivory sales. Too many elephants have died for the sake of a profit, for reasons that cannot and should not be justified. Sign this petition to demand full support of the ivory ban and the removal of the exemptions to the rule.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister May,

The United Kingdom is close to implementing a full ban on the ivory trade, but one obstacle stands in the way: the exemptions made for antique dealers who are permitted to sell “items containing ivory of artistic, cultural, or historic significance.” This is a poor justification for supporting the continued endangerment of elephants, whose numbers have been on a steady decline for the past several years.

You must demand that the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs remove these exemptions. There is no valid or acceptable excuse for enabling the murder of elephants for their tusks to provide this ivory. The sooner the United Kingdom bans all ivory sales permanently, the sooner the world can come closer to saving what remains of the elephant population.

Sincerely,

  4. Dear Prime Minister May,
Please ban all exemptions made for antique dealers — have pity on the poor elephants, especially considering that the
‘poachers’ get pennies as compared to the profit the dealers make, which forces the poachers to kill more elephants for a larger pay.

  5. Jeannette Allan says:

The killing of elephants for ivory is an abomination. No individual should stand in the way of this ban, for vested interest, or any other reason. A greedy enabling antique dealer with a devious reprehensible agenda always with an eye to profit and a fat bank account shares the guilt the other vermin. Those poachers are vicious psychopaths with no qualms about murdering those beautiful endangered elephants for money. This must be stopped.

Britain has always been known as an Animal Loving Country , and because one uppity Lady Victoria is against a Ban on Ivory, this witch is willing to drive these Elephants into Extinction– Who the hell does she think she is ? Let her know the Empire is gone along with the Glory Days of Britannia! I sure as Hell shall be letting her know !!!
