Praise Stiff Sentence for Man Who Viciously Abused His Dog

Andra Grace

Target: Judge Letitia Verdin with the 13th Judicial Circuit Court of South Carolina

Goal: Applaud her verdict in the case of a man who dragged his dog for two miles behind his truck before abandoning it to die

Andra Grace, a gentle pit bull dog, has received some justice following the terrible abuse she received at the hands of her owner. Roger Owens tied his dog’s front paws to the tailgate of his truck and dragged her for two long miles before leaving her to die alone by the side of the road. Witnesses called after Owens, but he refused to stop. Roughly eight months later Owens is facing 10 years in prison for his actions thanks to the verdict of Judge Letitia Verdin, who called the crimes among the cruelest she had ever seen according to an article in The State.

Owens’ attorney attempted to excuse his behavior with the fact that he was drunk that day and “not in his right mind.” But Judge Verdin only came down harder on him because of it. He received the maximum sentence for his abuse of poor Andra Grace, and additional time in prison for his chronic drunk driving and other traffic violations.

Concerned citizens tracked Owens down in a door-to-door search, and followed the trail of blood left behind until they found his abandoned dog, writes USA Today. Their dedication no doubt saved her life. Fundraising efforts paid for her rehabilitation, and Andra Grace (as she is now called) has been placed with a loving family who will give her the care she deserves.

Applaud Judge Verdin for putting this clearly dangerous man behind bars, and for rejecting claims that his drinking problem excuses his cruel animal abuse.

Dear Judge Verdin,

A loving pit bull named Andra Grace is safe with a new family. Her abuser faces years in prison, thanks to you. Roger Owens dragged the poor dog behind his pickup for at least two miles, and on top of it all was driving while intoxicated. He later attempted to use his problems with alcohol to excuse his actions, but you were not so easily swayed. Instead you proclaimed “This is one of the cruelest things that I have ever seen since I’ve been on the bench,” and sentenced Owens both for his animal abuse and his chronic traffic violations.

Thank you for issuing the maximum sentence for Owens’ ill treatment of his dog. Your verdict helps ensure that this dangerous and remorseless man cannot harm others as he has harmed Andra Grace–an innocent animal that no doubt loved and trusted him.

  1. I remember reading about this monster earliar this year. I hope he gets a dose of his own treatment while he is in jail. I am thankful that this sweet dog has found a loving home to care for her. And very grateful to those good Samaritans who saved this dog’s life. Without their efforts to find and rescue her, she would be dead right now. Animals are members of our familys. If you cannot love them don’t have them. They are beings..souls and God’s creatures. Thank you Judge Verdin for making an example of this monster Owens.

So happy to learn that there are actually many good people in this world. Thank you Judge Verdin, the new family that adopted this loving pit bull and all the kind citizens.
