Applaud Movement to Save Pets From Dying in Hot Cars

Target: Rhode Island Governor, Lincoln Chafee

Goal: Thank the governor of Rhode Island for passing a law that will make it illegal to leave pets in overheating cars

The governor of Rhode Island has recently passed a very important, life saving law. Too many guardians leave their pets in vehicles while shopping or running a quick errand. Leaving a pet in a hot car is extremely dangerous and often comes with dire consequences, with many pets suffering brain damage or death. The new law will serve guardians with a hefty fine, time in prison, or both for locking pets in cars during extreme heat or cold.

Temperatures can rise or fall drastically inside of an enclosed vehicle. Even when outdoor temperatures are moderate, the insides of vehicles can soar well above 30 degrees higher or lower than the outdoors. For example, on a 78 degree day, the inside of a car can creep to 120 degrees within minutes. Pets trapped in this scorching environment will become overheated quickly, frantically panting to cool down to no avail. Many animals can unfortunately die in the stifling environment of an enclosed vehicle.

Thanks to this ruling, leaving an animal in an enclosed vehicle for a prolonged period of time and in extreme temperatures is now considered a misdemeanor in Rhode Island. If convicted of animal cruelty in this manner, a person will face a year in prison, a $1,000 fine, or both. Law enforcement, animal control officers, and fire fighters are now enabled to take possession of an endangered animal locked in a vehicle in attempts to save the animal from a terrible fate. Thank the governor of Rhode Island for passing this measure into law, undoubtedly saving the lives of many animals.

Dear Governor Lincoln Chafee,

Too many animals die annually from entrapment in scorching hot or dangerously cold vehicles. However, thanks to your recent ruling, leaving an animal in an enclosed vehicle is now a crime. Your awareness and compassion will undoubtedly save the lives of many animals in the years to come.

Thank you for signing this very important measure into law. It is my hope that law enforcement of Rhode Island actively uses its new responsibilities to save animals from dangerous entrapment. Please continue to fight for the animals, companion and not, of Rhode Island.

A voice as important as yours is an immensely effective animal ally. I support your ruling and encourage more of its nature.
