Stop Mass Killing of Mute Swans

Mute Swan

Target: Director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Keith Creagh

Goal: Stop the mass killing of mute swans that are being wrongly blamed for harming the environment

The mute swan population in Michigan is being drastically reduced through systematic and brutal mass killings. The swans are being blamed for harming the environment, but no scientific studies have been done to justify these extreme actions. Urge Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to halt the killings until studies have been performed to discover the cause of these environmental issues.

The Michigan DNR has vowed to reduce the mute swan population in the state from 15,000 to just 2,000 by 2032. This is an 80 percent reduction in population, and the department plans to perform mass executions of these beautiful creatures by shooting them, breaking their necks or gassing them.

Department officials are justifying their horrific actions by blaming the swans for harming sub-aquatic plant life, but there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support their unfounded claims. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, no studies have been done to determine the real source of harm, which is likely being caused by fertilizers, treatment plants, factory runoff or other unrelated sources—not the mute swan population. “In reality, swans are merely convenient scapegoats for human-caused environmental problems,” ASPCA officials said.

By signing this petition, you will be urging the Michigan DNR Director to cancel their rash plans to perform mass killings of mute swans and instead use their resources to determine scientifically-based solutions to the problem.

Dear Mr. Creagh,

I am shocked and appalled that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced plans to drastically reduce the mute swan population through systematic and brutal killings. Blaming the swans for harming the environment without any scientific evidence to support the department’s claims is not only an injustice to these beautiful creatures, but also ineffective and a waste of resources.

The inhumane way the department plans to execute these killings is completely unacceptable. No animal deserves to be shot, have their neck broken or be gassed to death, especially when they are truly just a scapegoat for what is likely a human-caused environmental problem. The department needs to perform scientific studies to determine the real cause of harm to sub-aquatic plant life before taking such drastic actions. The impact of things like harmful fertilizers, treatment plants, factory runoff and other unrelated sources needs to be scientifically measured before all the blame is placed on mute swans.

I urge you to cancel, or at least postpone, the department’s plans to reduce the mute swan population until scientific evidence indicating the cause of the environmental problem can be obtained. The department’s valuable resources should be used to determine an actual solution to the issue, not wasted on rash measures. Further, if mute swans are scientifically proven to be the cause of harm to sub-aquatic plant life, I implore you to search for alternative solutions to humanely resolve the problem.

  1. Swans are so beautiful and elegant. Swan Lake is named because of their elegance. Leave them alone. In fact leave ALL animals alone.

  2. Swans are graceful birds. Hamburg f.i. does everything within possibility to help them get through the winter, they even have special winter quarters for the elegant. lovely birds. Why is Michigan trying to destroy them???? For that matter, there are many people whose lives are more worthless than the ones of these birds….

People, as a species, care only for themselves. They are selfish, greedy, and self-serving. I am often ashamed of being a member of this species.

  4. Rosemary Anderson says:

What is the matter with you people? Why is the answer to everything – kill it? Are you all sub-normal imbecilic morons who just want to kill. Find another way surely these swans can be rehomed somewhere also why blame the animal kingdon for mans, vile incompedence, distruction of the earth and its resourses and for anything and everything thats wrong. Why- because we are too arogant to think we did this. Shame on you all.

  5. laurel mancini says:

For pity’s sake! They are mute. At the very least, their children are not running about yelling and making a mess. Is this the only way to manage wild life? All the beauty and wonder of this planet we want to remove or destroy.

  6. caryl sawyer says:

I don’t know how Michigan can find time to kill swans, since they are so occupied with turning off the water to Michigan citizens, at the same time maintaining their position as Drug Capital of the US.

  7. Susan Trendle says:
