Stop Using Animals for Entertainment at Historic Pier

Target: Santa Monica Mayor Kevin Mckeown

Goal: Implement a ban on using animals for entertainment at the Santa Monica Pier.

Owners of exotic animals ranging from snakes to birds bring these creatures to the high-traffic Santa Monica Pier where they are shoved in the faces of tourists in an attempt to make a quick buck. This can not only cause distress to the animals that may not be used to being around large, loud groups of people, but stressing out the animals can also create a dangerous situation for passersby.

One bird owner who comes out to the pier admitted that the bird bites sometimes but claimed “that’s just what birds do” and it only causes “a little scrape” to passing tourists. The fact that this bird is demonstrating its tension in this overstimulating environment and its actions are being downplayed is a serious problem.

The Santa Monica Daily Press reported that the Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission recommended a ban on having the exotic animals at the pier because the use of these animals has gone from fun to pushing safety boundaries for both animals and visitors. The commission’s chair said there are animals lining both sides of the busy single walkway of the pier. Pet owners are very competitive for the money-garnering attention, creating a potentially hostile environment.

The Santa Monica City Council has the final word on implementing the ban. Help get these animals out of this toxic environment by urging the city mayor to implement the ban.

Dear Mayor Mckeown,

Owners of exotic animals bring these creatures to the high-traffic Santa Monica Pier and shove them in the faces of tourists in an attempt to make a quick buck. This distresses the poor animals that don’t have a choice in being there and may create a potentially dangerous situation for both the animals and passersby alike. It’s been reported that some of the animals have visibly demonstrated their irritation, yet this is being ignored.

The animals need to be taken away from this hostile environment and no longer be used for human entertainment. This is inhumane and the animals should not have to endure this kind of treatment for the sake of profit. I urge you to implement the ban on exotic animals at the Santa Monica Pier.
