Target: Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles MP, Planning Inspectorate
Goal: Do not allow laboratory animal supply company to breed beagles for research by blocking creation of new building
B & K Universal, also known as Bantin and Kingman Universal Limited or Yorkshire Evergreen, is a company that produces laboratory animals for research testing. They are looking to overturn a decision by the Yorkshire Council that prevents the construction of its facilities to breed beagle puppies.
These puppies are bred specifically for research testing. The building in question would be a puppy mill (an already horrifying practice), but instead of those puppies then going to loving homes, they would be headed for a life of misery and torture at the hands of lab technicians and research assistants.
Beagles are used largely in toxicity tests for drugs and chemicals, meaning they are force-fed dangerous substances or the chemicals are just directly inserted into their stomachs. The dogs are sick for days with vomiting and diarrhea, and often need to be euthanized because of their illnesses. Dogs can be strapped down for hours while chemicals are injected into their blood and stomachs.
These dogs are kept in deplorable conditions, and they often never see the outdoors for their entire lives. They are kept sick and restrained for years until they are ultimately put down when their usefulness has waned. It is cruel and inhumane to continue to produce dogs for this purpose, or to use dogs in testing programs when computer programs would suffice.
Please sign this petition to prevent the construction of this new breeding center for sick and abused dogs, and to condemn the use of animals in scientific research in general.
Dear Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles MP,
I am writing to demand that you stand strong and continue to refuse an appeal to B & K Universal for their plans to construct a building to breed beagle puppies for research testing. This practice is cruel and inhumane, and should be curbed at every level. Dogs are bred for the sole purpose of subjecting them to torture, and as a civil society we cannot allow our most vulnerable creatures to be treated in this way.
I applaud you and the Yorkshire Council for denying this inhumane company from conducting its business in Grimston, and ask you to please keep up your good work. Please continue to reject any applications by this laboratory animal breeding company and any others that may be submitted, and continue to support the rights of animals to a happy and healthy life.
