Target: Hoang Thi Thanh Nahn, Senior Official of the Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
Goal: Prosecute forest rangers who sold endangered pangolins to local restaurants to use in stew.
Forest rangers sold nearly 50 pangolins to a restaurant for their meat after they were rescued from poachers by Vietnamese police, who then turned the endangered animals over to the rangers. These government employees, who are allegedly known to care more about trees than animals, sold the innocent creatures to local restaurants so their meat could be used in meals. These forest rangers committed a crime that was just as bad as the poachers they were supposed to be saving the animals from.
Vietnam has come under fire recently for their involvement in the trade of cat and dog meat, and it’s obvious from this new situation that the country’s disregard for the lives and welfare of animals continues. Pangolins are little animals similar to anteaters, and they are possibly one of the world’s most poached mammals. Vice.com reported that more than a million of these poor creatures have been murdered over the past decade. Current conditions may contribute to extinction of these animals sooner than we think.
Selling pangolins for their meat not only pushes them that much closer to extinction, it shows that these officials completely lack respect for the welfare of these animals. These forest rangers should be protecting the pangolins, not making their situation worse. Demand these forest rangers receive full prosecution and criminal punishment for their inhumane actions.
Dear Hoang Thi Thanh Nahn,
Police recently rescued 42 pangolins, an endangered species, from poachers and then turned the animals over to forest rangers. The forest rangers sold these innocent creatures to local restaurants so their meat could be used in meals like stew. These rangers are supposed to protect animals, but they instead committed a terrible crime against the welfare of pangolins, who are on the brink of extinction.
Pangolins are already major targets by poachers for their meat, and they don’t need another enemy working against their survival. They deserve a fair chance at living in the wild before it’s too late and they are gone forever. They should not be used to make a profit so they can be chopped up and used as food.
I urge you to fully prosecute and criminally punish these forest rangers for their inhumane actions against pangolins.
