Thank Nonprofit for Rescuing Beagles from Labs

Target: Shannon Keith, President of the Beagle Freedom Project

Goal: Thank the Beagle Freedom Project for its commitment to creating better lives for beagles

Beagles are America’s most popular dog. They are docile, small and quite forgiving, which makes them great family pets. However, this also makes them ideal for laboratory testing, when compared to larger and more energetic dogs. When labs are done using the beagles, they are usually euthanized. These dogs end up never seeing the light of day or anything outside of the laboratory.

The Beagle Freedom Project, founded in 2010, is trying to change that. They have created a system that takes the beagles once the lab is done, and gives them a brighter future. They take the beagles to shelters or directly to homes, where the dogs are finally cared for and loved. The Project is doing its part to create a pleasant life for these dogs. While the ultimate goal would be to stop lab testing all together, the Beagle Freedom Project seeks to help those dogs that are being affected in the meantime.

This year, the organization also pushed for the passing of the Beagle Freedom Bill, which would require all testing labs to hand the dogs over to nonprofit shelters when they are too old or tired to be tested on anymore. While the bill did not pass in New York, the first state where it was put forward, the Beagle Freedom Project is working to enact similar bills in the future and in various states. Sign the petition below to thank members of the Beagle Freedom Project for their commitment to animal rights.

Dear Ms. Keith,

Animal testing is often inhumane and wastes the lives of many animals. We are writing to you today to applaud your commitment to not wasting said lives. Since beagles are indeed such sweet dogs, they make docile lab animals, but more than that they make amazing pets. We agree that these lab beagles deserve a second chance and to be loved.

We commend the Beagle Freedom Project’s goal of taking dogs condemned to labs and giving them families. In the future, we are in full support of the Beagle Freedom Bill, and of making your work compulsory for all labs. While it is not stopping animal testing altogether, a process that is going to take a very long time, you are doing the right thing today.
