Stop Discrimination Against Dog Breeds

Pit Bull

Target: New Jersey Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto

Goal: Prevent insurance companies from denying homeowners because of the breed of their dog

Homeowners who have a pet pit bull or similar breed are unjustly being denied by insurance companies based solely on the breed of their dog. This places unnecessary hardships on many responsible pet owners and leads to many well-behaved pit bulls being forced out of loving homes and surrendered to animal shelters where they have only a slim chance of being adopted. However, legislators in New Jersey have proposed a new measure that would stop insurance companies from unfairly discriminating against dogs based on breed.

Senate Bill 1310 (S.B. 1310) prohibits insurance companies from denying new applicants, refusing to renew existing policies, or cancelling existing policies based solely on the breed of the homeowner’s dog. Because homeowners with pit bulls or similar breeds are commonly discriminated against in this manner, many choose not to have proper homeowner’s insurance so they can keep their pets. Others are forced to surrender their beloved companions to overcrowded animal shelters, where the majority of pit bulls are killed.

The proposed legislation is a public safety measure for homeowners and could also save the lives of countless pit bulls by keeping them with their owners. Urge New Jersey government representatives to support this compassionate legislation.

Dear Mr. Prieto,

New Jersey homeowners with well-behaved pit bulls or similar breeds face unfair discrimination by insurance companies because of the breed of their dog. As a result, responsible pet owners are facing unnecessary hardships and many are forced to surrender their dog to overcrowded animal shelters where their beloved pet will face an almost certain death.

Senate Bill 1310 (S.B. 1310) would prohibit insurance companies from participating in breed discrimination by preventing them from denying applicants, refusing to renew policies, or cancelling existing policies based solely on the breed of the homeowner’s dog. This is a public safety measure that would allow many homeowners who have gone without insurance for the sake of their pet to be adequately insured. It would also keep countless well-behaved pit bulls out of taxpayer-funded animal shelters by allowing them to stay with their owners. I urge you to support this life saving legislation and ensure it is passed into law.

    Ignorant,and very foolish.

  3. Stan Benton says:

The propaganda and discrimination against pitt bulls is asinine. When I was young, it was German Shepherds who were demonized. Then for awhile it was Rottweilers. Now for some time it’s been Pitt Bulls. Most of this propaganda is from people who have no familiarity with any animals, and especially with Pitt Bulls. Of the strays that we have taken in, our Pitt Bull mix is the gentlest dog we have ever had.

  4. Sunny Milton says:

Yes! Please pass this bill. The results of this discrimination are just tragic. So many sweet pups don’t make it out of the shelter.
I never understood why it couldn’t just be the job of the landlord or the property owner, to meet with & screen each dog on an individual basis. I mean, they do that with the applicants?! Discrimination, in any form, should not be tolerated. And certainly should not be perpetuated by state laws!!! Such a shame.
