Save the Critically Endangered Asiatic Cheetah

Target: M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International

Goal: Take immediate action to prevent Asiatic cheetahs from becoming extinct.

Conservationists fear that the Asiatic cheetah is on the brink of extinction. It is estimated that only 50 remain in the wild. Alarmingly, the United Nations has announced that it will cut funding to protect the Asiatic cheetah, potentially dooming these beautiful creatures. With the withdrawal of U.N. support, non-governmental groups like Conservation International may be the last hope for Asiatic cheetahs.

Today, these cheetahs cling to survival in just a few areas of Iran. They are threatened by habitat loss and hunting. In 2001, Iran initiated a conservation program funded by the U.N. in an attempt to save Asiatic cheetahs. The U.N. has contributed $800,000 to the project, allowing for the creation of a network of park wardens to monitor and protect the cheetahs. The project has focused on building up the numbers of prey species that cheetahs hunt to survive. Although the amount of prey animals has increased, cheetahs are still being killed by farmers because they are seen as threats to livestock. Without immediate action, conservationists fear that the Asiatic cheetah will go the way of the Caspian tiger, which was hunted to extinction in the mid-1900s.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sanjayan,

I am writing to ask that you contribute funds to Iran’s Asiatic cheetah conservation program. These animals range over thousands of kilometers, so ensuring that they are protected throughout their entire range is no small undertaking. Iran has implemented programs to educate farmers about cheetah conservation and increase prey species for cheetahs. There is even a semi-captive breeding program that may help increase cheetah numbers and prevent inbreeding. However, all of these programs require funding. I ask that you and your colleagues at Conservation International do all you can to save these beautiful creatures from extinction.

Sincerely,
