Target: Recife, Brazil Mayor Gerardo Julio

Goal: Consider humane alternatives instead of removing and killing stray dogs

The country of Brazil is hosting the very popular World Cup sport competitions. While the World Cup is a thrilling event for global sports fanatics, homeless street dogs in Brazil are facing some troubling times. Animal activists are accusing the Brazilian government of removing stray dogs in an effort to clean up the country during the most watched sporting event of the year. Many people are concerned that the street dogs wandering around Brazil will be killed in similar fashion to the dogs in Russia during the Sochi Olympics. As the World Cup continues in Brazil, local witnesses have seen stray dogs being rounded up for removal with their own eyes. Unfortunately, this evidence does not stop the Brazilian government from denying what they are doing.

Animal welfare advocates are accusing Brazil of this horrific practice in hopes that they can help find a more sensible solution to the problem. There are many methods that can be put in place instead of fatally removing the dogs. For example, effective sterilization and immunizations for the stray dog population can dramatically decrease the number of dogs that wander the streets.

Humane Society International does not believe that removing the dogs will solve the problem of overpopulation. It plans to ask the mayor of Recife to stop removing the dogs and instead introduce a humane stray dog sterilization program. It is considering supporting Brazil by offering free sterilization and vaccination services for the stray dogs. HSI’s global street dog campaigns have spanned all over the world, including in countries such as India and Chile.

Please sign this petition to encourage Brazil to put in place some type of dog sterilization program so that we do not have a repetition of what happened to the dogs in Russia.

Dear Mayor Gerardo Julio,

It is very saddening to hear what is happening to the stray dogs in the city of Recife, Brazil. Although you are denying that any type of fatal killing of stray dogs is taking place, the fact that there have been eyewitnesses is disturbing.  We don’t want these innocent animals to suffer through this pain because of the World Cup tournaments or any other global events that so happen to come to Brazil.

The Humane Society International is offering their help to Brazil by giving free sterilization and vaccinations to the centers in Brazil that are willing to help the stray dogs. A mass killing of the dogs will not stop the problem of overpopulation, so we suggest that you take their generous offer.

Please consider HSI’s advice and allow the group to help save the stray dogs in Brazil.

  1. Looks like the Brazilian government learned absolutely nothing all the negative coverage surrounding similar circumstances in Russia during this year’s Olympics. The sad reality is that some humans will always be stupid, heartless and cruel. That’s why petitions such as this one MUST be promoted as much as possible. By the way, our world is overpopulated with people ….. so should we start killing all the homeless people???? !!!! I bet some of these non-compassionate dog killers think we should.

  2. For all the dog lovers in the world, please check out the petition below. It concerns a helpless puppy who was murdered in a running dishwasher at the hands of an unrepentant psychopath whose punishment is a joke.

  3. Cecily Colloby. says:

Sydney M-have just signed the petition re. the puppy killed in a dishwasher. Just when you think you have heard it all something worse crops up and you despair of the human race-or at least SOME of them.

  4. Deana Pickett says:

As a society we have got to demand strictor laws and punishment for these sicko’s
    This makes me ill

  5. Humans have become so disgusting that’s all I can say

  6. Nena Miller says:

Disgusting countries who shun responsibility for their people’s ignorance of animal care then choose mass murder as a solution. Man learns nothing throughout the history of other country’s episodes of ignorance

  7. heidi pixler says:

There are to many heartless people in the world, that don’t care about any body, or animals, but their selfs i for one help the homeless animals, and homeless people when i can, i take in alot of animals i try to help, people, animals, and i help the planet, we also need to stop destroying all of the rainforests in the world, any of the forest that’s where animals live and that’s where we get most of our oxygen on this planet and god wouldn’t want us to either.
