Target: Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri
Goal: Praise Nina Davuluri for using her status as Miss America to promote pet adoption
Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri has teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to promote adopting mix-breed pets. Davuluri appears in a new print ad, holding her dog on a beach, with text that reads “Celebrate Diversity: Adopt a Mutt.”
According to PETA, “Every year, 6 to 8 million dogs and cats end up in animal shelters, and half of them have to be euthanized because there simply aren’t enough good homes for them. In addition to adopting, families can help fight the homeless animal overpopulation crisis by making sure to have their animals spayed or neutered.” Davuluri is helping to save the lives of countless animals by using her position as Miss America to promote shelter adoption.
Davuluri is a pet owner herself. In an interview with PETA, she says, “I have Hanuman, and he is 13 years old. And he is half retriever, half question mark. I would really like people to know that every time they purchase an animal from a breeder, an animal is also losing their home—a rescue animal is losing their home.” She goes on to explain that people should make sure that they are truly ready for the commitment of being a pet owner before adopting an animal. “Having an animal is a full-time job,” she says. “It really is a huge responsibility—not only feeding them and walking them, playing with them, making sure that they’re healthy, taking them to the veterinarian. It’s just really important that they understand that it is a very large responsibility.”
A wide variety of dogs and cats are available to adopt from shelters, including purebreds and one-of-a-kind mixed-breeds. Pet adoption helps to alleviate the problem of pet overpopulation, as well as combat the cruelty involved with puppy mills. By signing the petition below, you will thank Miss America Nina Davuluri for encouraging pet adoption to her fans around the world.
Dear Ms. Nina Davuluri,
I was pleased to learn that you teamed up with PETA for a new ad campaign that promotes the adoption of mixed-breed pets. As you know, pet overpopulation is an ongoing crisis and by promoting adoption you are helping to save the lives of countless pets who would be euthanized if they could not find a home.
Thank you for using your status as Miss America 2014 to speak out for the betterment of animals.
