Impose Stricter Laws For Animal Abuse

Target: Ohio Governor, John Kasich

Goal: Create harsher punishments for perpetrators of severe animal abuse.

Ohio remains one of only a handful of states in the U.S. that does not classify animal abuse as a felony on the first offense. Even the most severe cases of animal abuse will rarely result in jail time or any punishment that will prevent the problem from recurring. This results in incredibly weak protection for innocent animals, and even the worst animal abusers will likely return to society unscathed. Urge Ohio to implement stricter laws for animal abuse.

Animal abuse was not considered a felony in Ohio until 2013, and even then the law only applied to kennel owners and repeat offenders. Everything from mutilating, killing, neglecting, and torturing animals is punishable by a maximum first-degree misdemeanor for first offenders. In other words, the state of Ohio allows citizens to commit the most horrific acts and quickly return to society. Unfortunately, many of these criminals will continue to harm animals, and perhaps even worse, as they are aware their consequences are minor.

These insufficient laws suggest negligence from the state of Ohio and are harmful to many more than just those involved. Failure to properly punish animal abusers sends a strong message to the entire state that animal abuse is not an issue of priority. Of the utmost importance is the safety of innocent animals that have fallen victim to horrible owners. Ohio must take a stand to protect both animals and citizens and properly handle animal abuse cases. Urge Ohio to implement stricter laws regarding cases of animal abuse.

Dear Governor Kasich,

An apparent lack of proper punishment for animal abusers has haunted the state of Ohio in the past and continues to this day. Much of the United States has already taken a step forward for animal rights and revised their laws. Please implement stricter laws for animal abuse and vow to protect innocent lives.

As is, animal abusers are committing the most horrific acts and receiving little to no punishment. They will likely continue their ways, as there is little incentive on their part to change. An effective, justified punishment will deter individuals from harming animals and ensure those who are found guilty may never do so again.

Failure to take advantage of our legal system is an injustice to the state of Ohio. Moreover, it portrays negligence and demonstrates a state of apathy regarding animal abuse and its victims. Citizens of Ohio are not pleased with the current lack of justice. This can, however, change. Ohio can take action, like so many other states, and take a stand for animal rights. Please implement stricter laws regarding animal abuse.
