Target: Catherine Bearder, Liberal MEP
Goal: Support the ban against the import of lion-hunting trophies into the European Union.
Many animal species have become endangered due to hunting, including lions. Many lion-hunting trophies that come into the European Union originate from countries in West Africa, which is home to only 400 lions. Although the international trade in endangered species is strictly regulated, there is a gaping loophole concerning the importation of hunting trophies. Urge government officials to prevent lion-hunting trophies from being imported and traded throughout the European Union.
Since hunting trophies are considered household and personal effects, people have been able to use the European Union as a way to trade endangered animal parts, including lion trophies. Over 1,500 lion-hunting trophies made it into the European Union between 2008 and 2012. Now, the European Union has had enough and is set to ban the import of lion-hunting trophies. Liberal MEP Catherine Bearder and many other animal welfare activists are saying that this ban will play a vital part in the conservation of lions and other endangered species.
This ban will effectively close the loophole that has been allowing people to import endangered species, such as lions, as hunting trophies into the European Union. Sign this petition and show your support for this ban against lion-hunting trophies.
Dear Catherine Bearder,
I was astonished to hear that lion-hunting trophies and other hunting trophies of endangered species are able to make it into the European Union as a result of a loophole. Since hunting trophies are considered household and personal effects, this allows people to use the European Union as a way to trade endangered animal parts.
I understand that you and many other animal welfare activists are saying that this ban will be a vital part in the conservation of lions and other endangered species. I must also agree, because I believe that by closing this loophole and implementing even stricter regulations, the European Union will no longer be used as a route to trade endangered animal parts.
The number of lion-hunting trophies and other endangered animal trophies that have made it into the European Union is absolutely shocking. This ban will effectively close the loophole once and for all. This ban has my full support because I believe that it will be effective in impeding the trade of endangered animal parts into the European Union.
