Target: Hiroshi Mikitani, Chief Executive Officer of Rakuten
Goal: Thank Rakuten.com for stopping the sale of whale meat and whale products through their online retailers
Rakuten.com is one of the largest online retailers in Asia. Based out of Tokyo, Japan, this mammoth site allows shoppers to access over 40,000 different online stores to make it easy to find everything they need. It is often called the “Japanese Amazon.com.” In spite of its positive face, the site has a darker side.
Whaling has been an active industrial trade in Japan since the 1890s and continues through to present day in spite of the growing international opposition. Whale meat is still sold in fish markets throughout Japan and until recently, was available online through Rakuten.com. There have been dozens of petitions sent to the CEO of this company asking, begging, pleading, or downright demanding that he cease the sale of these products. Thanks to our efforts, it seems that he has relented.
As of April 1st, 2014, Rakuten will no longer sell whale meat through any of its online retailers. This, along with the unprecedented canceling of the annual Antarctic whale hunt by the Japanese government shows that they are beginning to listen to us. We need to let them know that whale slaughter is no longer an acceptable industry and that changes need to be made.
Sign this petition to help us thank Hiroshi Mikitani for changing his company’s stance on the sale of whale meat and whale products. Though it may seem like a single step, it is a step in the right direction and brings us one step closer to stopping this senseless slaughter and conserving whales for our future generations.
Dear Hiroshi Mikitani, CEO of Rakuten.com
Whale meat and whale products have been sold in the past on your online retailer Rakuten.com, and there have been multiple petitions sent to you demanding you cease the sale of these products on your website. By continuing to sell the products, you were contributing to the senseless slaughter of countless whales throughout the Pacific Ocean.
On April 1st, 2014, you and your company made the collective decision to stop the sale of whale meat and whale products through your online retailers at Rakuten.com. This unprecedented decision is the first step toward ensuring whale conservation for future generations. We want to say thank you for hearing our voices and for helping to do your part to stop these pointless killings.
