Stop Destroying Rain Forests Home to Endangered Tigers

Target:  Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia

Goal: Stop destroying the rain forest habitats of Indonesia with palm oil plantations.

Indonesia’s palm oil plantations are leading to the imminent extinction of rare and irreplaceable animals, including the endangered Sumatra tiger. Research has found that only two populations of the tiger survive. Palm oil plantations are primarily to blame for the tiger’s rapid demise, as they are for the demise of a number of other rain forest species.

Land clearing has torn rare animal populations apart and has isolated them, shrinking their habitats and making it harder for them to reproduce. This is leading to rapid extinction of many of these animals. The Sumatra tiger, for instance, has declined by 16 percent in only 12 years.

Animals like the Sumatra tiger must be protected. They serve as majestic symbols of the rain forest habitat and its natural order. Sign the petition and demand that actions be taken to end land clearing and illegal palm oil plantations in order to save these rare and endangered species.

Dear Minister Bakar,

A growing number of your nation’s animal and plant species are facing the threat of certain extinction, including the Sumatra tiger, of which only two populations remain. The rest have been lost to land clearing and palm oil plantations.

Every animal, regardless of its natural role, from the largest tiger to the smallest bird, deserves a safe home. I demand that you and your government take steps to protect animals such as the endangered Sumatra tiger from extinction by ending deforestation by palm oil plantations.
