Protect Pristine Islands from Development

Target: Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott

Goal: Protect pristine islands and oceans in Western Australia’s Kimberly region

The discovery of a new population of the endangered northern quoll on an island in Western Australia illustrates the need to conserve this pristine area with marine and national parks. Populations of the northern quoll have declined rapidly due to habitat loss throughout their range in northern Australia. A recently proposed national park would cover 1,160 square miles. The park would help to protect coral reef and mangrove habitats as well as the vulnerable northern quoll population. Please sign this petition to urge Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott to follow through with the proposed Horizontal Falls National Park.

The northern quoll is a small carnivorous marsupial native to Australia. In addition to habitat loss, the species faces a grave threat from the cane toad, a species introduced to Australia. Populations of the northern quoll found on islands in the Kimberly region would be easier to protect, since the cane toad could potentially be kept off the island. The northern knoll has been found on 12 different islands in the Kimberly region. It is critical that these islands be protected as part of a national park.

A proposed national park in the region would include the Horizontal Falls, a remarkable horizontally flowing waterfall discovered in the area. According to Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett, “The extraordinary Horizontal Falls are an internationally renowned tourist attraction and it is imperative we maintain the pristine environment that surrounds them.” John Carey of the Pew Environmental Group states, “Protecting the Kimberley coast and its marine and bird life provides a balance to the rapid spread of mining and other industrial development.”

The Kimberly region of Western Australia is a treasure that should be protected from development. The proposed Horizontal Falls National Park would protect many pristine areas and habitat critical for species such as the endangered northern knoll. Please sign this petition to encourage  the Australian prime minister to follow through on this proposed national park.

Dear Prime Minister Abbott,

I was very pleased to learn of the proposal for a new national park in the Kimberly region of Western Australia. This proposed park would protect important coral reef and mangrove habitats, as well as newly discovered populations of the northern quoll.

As rapid development destroys critical habitat in many areas of Australia, it is important that this development be offset by designating new protect areas such as the proposed Horizontal Falls National Park. I encourage you to follow through on the development of Horizontal National Park.
