Stop Poachers from Killing Elephants for Their Skins

Target: Htin Kyaw, President of Myanmar

Goal: End the illegal killing of elephants to make leather jewelry and souvenirs.

Elephants are being killed at the rate of roughly one per week in the country of Myanmar, in large part due to poachers targeting them for their skins. While elephants continue to die for their ivory as well, there has been a rising trend in the killing and skinning of these creatures to make leather for trinkets and jewelry. Most of the cured elephant leather is then smuggled into China. We need to take action and demand that Myanmar do more to protect these endangered animals.

Most of the skinned elephants have been discovered in the remote Ayeyawady Region of Myanmar, which is considered to be a lawless zone. Villagers are often intimidated and are afraid to report poachers to authorities, making the true extent of the crisis difficult to determine. What we do know is that there are now fewer than 2,000 wild elephants remaining in Myanmar, and unless more is done to crack down on illegal hunting and killing, they may likely disappear forever.

The government of Myanmar must crack down on the illegal trade of elephant parts, including their skins. Sign this petition to demand that stronger laws be put in place to ensure that these elephants can have a future in this Asian nation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Kyaw,

Poachers are killing wild elephants for their skins in the Ayeyawdy Region and elsewhere at unprecedented levels. According to conservationists, roughly one elephant is killed and skinned each week to supply the demand in countries like China for elephant leather, which is made into jewelry. This ongoing slaughter is unnecessary and is pushing the elephant population in Myanmar to the brink of extinction.

There is no reason that elephants should have to die at the hands of illegal poachers to make these gruesome souvenirs. We, the undersigned, demand that you do more to protect these magnificent creatures and call for stronger laws and harsher penalties against poachers. Please do not allow Myanmar’s remaining wild elephants to die out.

Sincerely,
