Target: Jane Goodall Institute
Goal: Encourage the Jane Goodall Institute to maintain its efforts to save two chimpanzees from being euthanized
Two abused chimpanzees, Amadeus and Nikki, who are living in the Chimp Eden sanctuary in South Africa, are facing euthanasia after a minor attack on a staff member. The chimps acted in this manner due to past trauma and do not deserve to be killed.
The two chimps are survivors of the illegal wildlife trades. Amadeus, 23, was chained up outside a gas station for years to attract customers. Nikki, 20, was also held in captivity as a pet who was forced to wear costumes and eat at a table like a human. The two were eventually rescued and lived in the Johannesburg Zoo until being transferred to Chimp Eden, Their current location.
Their behavior in the minor attacks is due to their past trauma and captivity. Chimpanzees are very intelligent and much like humans in that they do not like to feel possessed or controlled. They should not be punished for their aggressive behavior in this situation.
The Jane Goodall Institute is currently scrambling to come up with the $250,000 that it needs to save the chimps by June 8th, 2014. The funds would be used to make a new, secure enclosure for the chimps. Unfortunately, the deadline is less than a week away and the Jane Goodall Institution has only raised 20% of the goal thus far.
Please sign the petition below to raise awareness about this issue and urge the Jane Goodall Institute to persist in its efforts to raise money to save the chimpanzees.
Dear Jane Goodall Institute,
Thank you for your persistent efforts to save Amadeus and Nikki, two chimpanzees facing euthanasia. These two chimps were just acting out of fear and past trauma when they harmed a staff member at the Chimp Eden sanctuary. Chimpanzees are very intelligent and independent creatures and much like humans, they do not like to feel possessed or threatened. It is for these reasons that these innocent chimps should not be euthanized.
We realize that the deadline to raise 250,000 is less than a week away and you have only reached 20% of your goal, but we are writing to ask that you keep up your efforts to save these chimps. In these next several days you must raise awareness on a wide scale, specifically to wealthy individuals who support animal rights.
It is unjust that these chimpanzees are facing death after years of mistreatment, based on one incident. Please do anything in your power to prevent this from occurring. Thank you for all you do to protect the rights of chimpanzees.
