Target: Bark & Co. Co-Founder, Matt Meeker
Goal: Commend development of a free mobile app that makes it easier for prospective pet owners to find nearby dogs to adopt
The Internet has proven a major boon to dogs in need of forever homes. Adoption shelters have gotten a lot of attention through their websites and social media accounts by posting photos of animals who need homes along with information about their personality and medical history. One dog-loving company, Bark & Co., has developed a free iPhone app called “BarkBuddy,” based on the dating app Tinder, which allows users to swipe through profiles of local people to find a match for themselves. BarkBuddy connects users to dogs in local rescue centers and shelters, thanks to its network of 2,500 such organizations as well as the information it gets from adoption databases across the US and Canada.
Those who download the app can filter through local dogs by breed, sex, size, age, and activity levels, allowing people to find the right dog for their lifestyle. If they fall in love with a dog, they can then swipe right to see more information about the dog’s temperament and their life before being rescued. Even those not wishing to adopt can help friends or family find the perfect pup by sharing a dog’s profile via social media outlets. The app’s website declares that it “…is the actualization of our belief that everyone should have a dog in their life, and every dog should have a human.”
Bark & Co.’s Communications Director, Chris O’Brien, told TODAY.com that BarkBuddy has been more successful than they hoped, with the app “on track for 50 million swipes in May alone” and with shelters reporting a deluge of requests from people hoping to meet dogs. The company is currently working on a way to find out how many swipes actually lead to people taking action and adopting dogs.
By signing this petition, you are thanking BarkBuddy and Bark & Co. for their innovative approach to matching people with dogs, making it easier than ever for people to provide a forever home to the perfect dog.
Dear Mr. Meeker,
As you know, the Internet puts the tools in people’s hands to do good with their resources, and your recent development of the BarkBuddy app is an excellent example of such a tool. The idea to streamline and optimize the rescue animal matchmaking process by rebuilding it on the model of human matchmaking apps is a simple yet brilliant one. The new “Tinder for dogs” revolutionizes the difficulties of finding a shelter dog to fit one’s lifestyle and personality.
Thank you for developing the BarkBuddy app and making it available for free to iPhone users. Thank you for making adopting rescue dogs even more convenient and stress-free. I urge you to make this app available to Android users and those outside the US and Canada as soon as possible.
