Target: Ken-ichi Ueda, Co-Director and Founder of the mobile phone app iNaturalist
Goal: Applaud this innovative approach to filling the gap in our knowledge of endangered species
Species extinction is happening a thousand times faster than it would be if humans were not around, according to a study in the journal Science. Yet, one major problem we face with conservation efforts is a lack of information. We are still unsure in terms of the rarer organisms on Earth how many species exist, how they are distributed geographically, and how their populations are changing. Thankfully, an innovative mobile phone app was designed to address this information gap. Support the team at iNaturalist for encouraging people around the world to take an active role in preventing species extinction.
The iNaturalist app enables any person to report sightings of rare plants and animals. App users can actually educate one another – noting when, for example, a particular species has not been sighted in a certain area before and expanding that species’ known range. By encouraging people to engage with the natural world, the app also brings together nature lovers from around the world to contribute to a global conservation network.
The iNaturalist app forms part of a larger movement that empowers “citizen scientists” to counteract in their everyday lives the damage we human beings have wrought on biodiversity. Advocating for shared responsibility for the planet, this move toward greater participation by common people in conservation efforts provides us with a more hopeful and collaborative outlook on environmental protection.
By signing the petition below, you can express your support of this powerful initiative that invites us to take an interest in the future of Earth’s many unique and wonderful species and ultimately to achieve their survival.
Dear Mr. Ueda,
I am writing to applaud you for your development of the mobile phone app iNaturalist. By inviting us all to be “citizen scientists” and take an active interest in protecting Earth’s incredibly diverse species, you are bringing us together under a shared responsibility for the planet. You are encouraging each of us to fill the vast gap in information regarding species’ numbers and distribution, thereby aiding conservation efforts. Most importantly, you have provided us with a greater sense of hope.
Considering that species’ extinction is currently occurring one thousand times faster than if humans were not around, as outlined in a recent report in the journal Science, your app takes on particular significance. You demonstrate that though our species has inflicted profound damage, we can find a way to create a better future for our planet. I hope that your efforts inspire many more innovations to come.
