Target: Steve Rowe, General Counsel of Darigold, Inc.
Goal: Expose the mistreatment of cows at various Darigold member farms
Darigold, a Northwest dairy co-operative, has been accused by many of its workers of allowing cows who have been injured or are suffering from infected udders to be milked. Many workers from Darigold’s various member farms have spoken up about this issue. These dairy workers claim that they were given orders to milk cows that were sick or injured and obviously in pain. The reason for the cows’ injuries is likely the overcrowded conditions which they live in on the farms.
According to a United Farm Worker organizer, the workers are instructed to milk as much as possible, as quickly as possible even if the cows show signs of being in pain or when the milk is tainted with blood. Darigold’s General Counsel, Steve Rowe claims the accusations are misleading and that the milk is not contaminated. Even though the milk may be safe to drink, the injured and sick cows are still being forcibly milked regardless of the pain the are enduring.
Having a glass of milk with every meal isn’t worth it if it means injured cows living in overcrowded conditions have suffer for it. Expose the mistreatment of cows at Darigold’s member farms.
Dear Mr. Rowe,
It has come to my attention that Darigold is facing allegations of mistreating its cows. Many workers from Darigold’s member farms claim they are given orders to milk cows regardless of their injuries or even if blood shows up in the milk. The workers also say the reason for the injuries is due to overcrowded conditions in which the cows must live.
This mistreatment of Darigold’s cows is absolutely unacceptable. Cows that are hurt and in pain should not be forced to be milked, especially if their milk is tainted with blood. Although Darigold claims it inspects and tests its milk, that does not fully address the problem. Even if the milk is uncontaminated and safe to consume, the injured and sick cows are still being caused unnecessary pain.
I understand that dairy products are popular with consumers, used on their own and in preparation of many meals. It isn’t worth it if cows are being hurt. And although the accusations concern member farms, Darigold must answer for and stop this cruelty since the company is the ultimate distributor of the products.
Send a clear message and let the contracted farms know that such activity is unacceptable, and could mean loss of contracts. But however you do so, I urge you to immediately halt the mistreatment of cows at Darigold’s member farms.
