Target: Tim Phillips, Co-founder of Animal Defenders International (ADI)
Goal: Commend the rescue and rehabilitation of abused circus lions
The gruesome reality of circus animals is becoming well-known and many people are demanding change within the industry, often insisting that the animal victims are no longer forced to perform. However, there are still many people whom patron circuses with their families. The reality of the situation could be that these people do not know what happens to animals in the circus and are ignorant to the inhumane treatment and abuse undergone within the circus industry. Enter Animal Defenders International (ADI), a group dedicated to exposing the brutalities imposed upon lions in circuses. ADI’s goal is to capture abused lions and bring them to a rehabilitation center in the United States, allowing the lions to live a fruitful existence. This mission is incredible and deserves recognition.
ADI has created an award-winning documentary titled Lion Ark, which follows brave rescuers on a journey to capture petrified lions and deliver them to Colorado so they can live out their lives in peace. A group, filmed by Tim Phillips, traveled to eight different circuses in Bolivia in order to capture mistreated lions, many of which were incredibly scared, defensive and hostile to their rescuers. The film follows 25 lions on their journey to a farm sanctuary in Colorado. Upon visiting the lions in their new, safe home, the crew and the documentary viewers are gifted with the energy of happy lions that are no longer skittish or needlessly aggressive.
In 2009, Bolivia was ordered to outlaw the use of all animals in its many circuses. However, only one circus complied with the rest resuming business as usual with illegal animals, including an exuberant amount of lions, which were too often crammed in filthy cages when they were not being forced to perform. Armed with authorities allowing the invasion, ADI infiltrated these circuses in order to bring justice to the lions by transporting them to their new home.
These brave individuals behind Lion Ark deserve hefty recognition. By signing this petition, you commend Tim Phillips and his crew for their immense respect and love for the king of the jungle.
Dear Mr. Phillips,
You spearheaded a documentary film titled Lion Ark, which has won awards and inspired people from every walk of life to become active in the fight to help free animals from brutal circuses. Your efforts were risky, with many lion-hoarders bearing knives and death threats due to your intent on saving the lions they abused. I wholeheartedly commend and thank you for your boundless love of lions. Without you, these magnificent beasts would still be slaving away in Bolivia.
Because of your film and its message, many families, cities and countries across the world are viewing animal abuse in a new light. What once was commonplace is now archaic abuse and neglect. Thank you for defending wild animals and saving them from a monotonous, abusive circus life.
