Success: Monarch Butterfly Population Rebounds

Target: President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto

Goal: Praise the rebound of monarch butterfly population.

For years biologists have worried over the monarch butterfly population, as their numbers have dwindled significantly thanks to human activity. The good news is that biologists have found that the butterfly’s numbers have rebounded due to conservation efforts. Thank President Enrique Pena Nieto for Mexico’s contribution to restoring the butterfly’s habitat by signing this petition.

The monarch butterfly has been in decline for several years due to destruction of their habitat, pesticide use, and climate change. As farms are growing bigger, flowers and milkweed are being driven out. This presents a barren wasteland for many creatures who depend on nectar and pollen for food. Pesticides have also hurt the species significantly, along with many other animals. However, the main factor that has led to the massive decline of butterflies is the destruction of their habitat. Trees are being cut down at a rapid rate in Mexico, and these forests are homes for the monarch butterfly.

Force Change has published several petitions regarding this issue urging readers to do their part in restoring the butterfly’s lost habitat. The audience has responded magnificently and these changes are helping the population tremendously. In 2014, biologists stated that monarch butterflies have rebounded by 69 percent from 2013. The insects that made it to wintering grounds in Mexico covered 2.79 acres of woods, up from 1.65 acres measured in the previous year. While this is spectacular news, biologists still fret about the well-being of the monarch butterfly. Lincoln Brower, who is the leading entomologist at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, states that if butterfly populations drop less than two acres, the species is still in danger of disappearing. There is still a lot of work to be done, but at least positive changes are happening. Please sign this petition and let President Enrique Pena Nieto know that we appreciate his country’s efforts to keep the monarch butterfly alive and thriving.

Dear President Enrique Pena Nieto,

I am writing this letter to praise your country’s efforts to save the monarch butterfly. The main factor to this species’ decline is the loss of habitat. Unfortunately, Mexico has been cutting the trees these butterflies used to roost in, but conservation efforts have brought the species back. In 2014, biologists found that the species rebounded by a whopping 69 percent. This is incredible and I applaud your country’s actions.

As butterflies migrate from Canada to Mexico, the issue of increasing their numbers is an international concern. I encourage your country to keep aiding these insects in the future, as they are crucial for plants to grow. Flowers and milkweed need to be planted, trees shouldn’t be cut down, and pesticide use needs to stop for the monarch butterfly to fully rebound.

  1. Beautiful Monarchs back where they belong? Terrific! And thank you: they are awesome to watch!

  2. I hope the President of Mexico also bans bull fighting, as well as the “torneo del lazo” in Yucatan where horses are eviscerated for fun #noaltorneodelazo #boycottYucatan
