Target: Iowa Governor Terry Branstad
Goal: Demand the passage of legislation that would help end greyhound racing
For far too long, greyhound dogs that should be family pets have been used in inhumane races where they are exhausted, injured and sometimes even killed. New legislation has been proposed in Iowa that would shut down a racing park and take away millions of dollars in profits from greyhound breeders who race their dogs. Urge Iowa Governor Terry Branstad to sign the legislation and help end the cruelty of greyhound racing in Iowa completely.
Like any other dog breed, greyhounds were meant to live in a home with a family who loves and cares for them. However, because of their natural speed and agility, greyhound breeders have cruelly been using their dogs in races to make a profit. Racing dogs face a lifetime of confinement in cages and kennels, where there are only let out to train and race. For years, breeders ensure their dogs are raced to the point of physical exhaustion or terrible injury and then heartlessly discard them when they can no longer race. Some dogs even sustain fatal injuries on the track, or injuries so severe they are euthanized.
The proposed legislation would end racing at Bluffs Run Greyhound Park beginning next year, and would also take away approximately $14 million in annual subsidy payments that breeders receive from casino gambling profits. Unfortunately, the legislation does allow for racing to continue at Dubuque Greyhound Park without any subsidies, but the advocacy organization Grey2K USA stated that though this means racing may continue for a few more years in Iowa, “without subsidies, we are confident that greyhound racing will fail.” Urge Governor Branstad to sign the proposed legislation to help end greyhound racing in Iowa.
Dear Governor Branstad,
Like any dog breed, greyhounds deserve to spend their lives in homes with loving families, but instead are cruelly locked up in cages their entire lives and used in inhumane races where they are exhausted, injured, and even killed. Iowa legislators have proposed a measure that would shut down a racing park and take away millions of dollars in profits from breeders who race their dogs. I urge you to sign this legislation and help end the cruelty of greyhound racing in your state.
Racing dogs are unjustly pushed to the point of physical exhaustion or terrible injury to make a profit. Breeders often heartlessly discard their dogs when they can no longer race, and some dogs even sustain fatal injuries on the track.
Senate File 2362 (SF 2362) would help gradually end greyhound racing in Iowa by ending racing at Bluffs Greyhound Park and would take away approximately $14 million in annual subsidies that breeders receive from casino gambling profits. I urge you to make the compassionate choice to help end the cruelty of greyhound racing in your state by signing SF 2362 into law.
