Stop Murdering Canada Geese

Target: Randy Clark, Supervisor, Cornwall Town Board, Cornwall, N.Y.

Goal: Demand the Cornwall Town Board to stop killing its Canada geese

Members of Cornwall, N.Y.’s Town Board will soon meet and decide whether or not to once again contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services (USDA) to cull its Canada goose population. This agency’s culling methods are brutal and inhumane. Cornwall must be compelled to find a more humane way of dealing with its geese.

USDA Wildlife Services contracts with towns throughout the country to reduce goose populations. These inhumane round-ups occur during the summer while the geese are raising their young. Personnel will typically enter a goose habitat in the early morning while the geese are loosely huddled together and then proceed to grab the terrified geese and stuff them into steel cages. It is not uncommon during these round-ups for mother geese to be forcefully separated from their young. The caged geese are later murdered and their corpses are given to various organizations (like zoos) to be used as food. Last summer nearly 150 Canada geese in Cornwall were dealt with in such a manner. This is unacceptable and it must not be allowed to happen again.

Many studies show that killing geese does not effectively reduce their numbers as other geese will simply move in to fill any void and, of course, they will continue to breed. Also, more humane options do exist. For example, towns can make simple alterations to locations used by geese as habitats to make it physically challenging for the geese to live there, encouraging them to seek shelter elsewhere. This is much better than gassing them to death.

Please take a minute to sign the petition below to tell Cornwall’s Town Board that it must not employ USDA Wildlife Services this summer to kill its Canada geese. The Board must find a more humane solution.

Dear Mr. Clark,

I was dismayed to learn that Cornwall, N.Y. may once again employ USDA Wildlife Services to cull its Canada goose population. I understand that geese can sometimes be a nuisance, but Cornwall must use humane methods to deal with them. Last year, USDA Wildlife Services captured nearly 150 Canada geese in Cornwall, forcing them into steel cages, and later killing them. These methods are brutal, inhumane, ineffective, and completely pointless. Many studies show that killing geese is not an effective population control method since voids in geese populations are often quickly filled by other geese. Also, Cornwall can make simple landscape alterations around the lakes usually inhabited by Canada geese, making it difficult for them to live there and forcing them to seek shelter elsewhere.

Murdering terrified geese is wrong on every level. Please do the right thing this summer and do not employ USDA Wildlife Services. Find a more humane way to deal with Cornwall’s Canada goose population.

  1. Cecily Colloby. says:

Cull a few people instead-namely the idiots who want to murder the geese…..

  2. Sharon Beller says:

Mans inhumanity to man is nothing compared to animals. Why not relocate them on the off breeding season

  3. Yes, we should be culling Homo sapiens–so overpopulated and dirty, and in every corner of the planet. When I lived in Maine for awhile, the Town of Camden was bothering geese because of “complaints of goose dropping on the mono-culture grass. We said “what about all the filthy cigarette butts humans are dropping around the harbour–which all go into the ocean?

  4. Christina Anderson says:

Agree with every single comment re culling humans and their filth. There are way too many of them and they treat animals terribly. I’m often ashamed of being human.

    • Pamela Bolton says:

I totally agree with you. Too many SUB-HUMANS with no heart for me. Clean them out and then they can move on to others.

  5. Cornwall should be ashamed. They hired the feds to kill geese last year and now they are at it again? Clearly, new geese fly in every year (duh). So they are going to have to learn to live with it, or be known as the ignorant, intolerant town that kills everything that moves.

  6. Yves Danneels says:

Every single member of the town board voted to have our resident geese ‘managed’ by the USDA Wildlife Killing Service last year. Shameful, Brutal, Inhumane. The USDA Wildlife Killing Service are nothing but a bunch of thugs following orders of ignorant little bureaucrats anointed to ‘service’ our wildlife on our tax dollars. I am asking the Town and Village Boards to keep the USDA off our river bank and our ponds this year and forever. Please follow the recommendations of our ‘save the geese’ committee to control our geese and other wildlife by non-lethal means.

  7. StarBird says:

    You are fools.

You make URLS that are rejected by servers because they are too long.

How is it you don’t know this?
