Praise Reintroduction of European Bison

Target: CEO of World Wide Fund for Nature, Carter Roberts

Goal: Praise WWF for reintroduction of European bison

Partnering with Rewilding Europe, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is about to begin the reintroduction of the European bison. So far the organization has brought 20 bison to the Southern Carpathians in Romania, with more on the way once summer arrives. The species has been absent from this area for 200 years and the organizations should be praised for its work.

Regaled as the biggest reintroduction of bison in Europe, WWF is hoping to boost the biodiversity of the surrounding ecosystem. The bison is considered a keystone species and will be an important grazer for the environment and larger prey for bears. Currently, the global population of European bison is at 5,000, with only 3,500 living in free or semi-free herds.

The plan began with the bison being released into acclimation zones, and later into rewilding zones meant to teach them how to survive on their own and form their herd social structure. Once the fall season begins, the herd will be moved to a protected site that is 60,000 hectares in size and become the first wild herd of bison since the 18th century. The goal is to maintain a herd of 500 bison by 2025, where the animals will hopefully bring in tourist revenue for the country.

Unfortunately, the wild European bison went extinct in the 20th century thanks to hunters and habitat loss. However, Rewilding Europe and WWF hoping to remedy this problem with free-living bison in areas like Ukraine, Belarus, and Germany. By signing this petition, you will be applauding these organizations for their conservation efforts and thanking them for giving new life to a keystone species.

Dear Mr. Roberts,

I am writing to thank your organization for the reintroduction of the wild European bison into Romania. I understand that this process will take some time, as the animals have to regain their wild instincts, but I sincerely hope it will be a success. These animals belong in the wild, and their presence is necessary for the ecosystem.

Like the rest of our threatened and endangered species, many are given this status because of humans. I am grateful that your organization took it upon themselves to correct our mistakes. Wild animals are necessary to preserve our environment, and I hope that once the bison’s numbers go up there will be better protection for their wild populations. Thank you for your efforts, and may the reintroduction process be a successful one.
