Target: President of USDA, Tom Vilsack
Goal: Stop cruel and unusual treatment of animals at USDA research facilities.
The United States Department of Agriculture has been secretly conducting inhumane animal testing and cruel breeding practices. At the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), countless animals are tested on and put under unthinkably deplorable breeding conditions to provide meat producers with methods on how to make more money from their livestock.
According to an ongoing investigation by The New York Times, USMARC is responsible for scientifically altering the breeding capacity and output of pigs, which leads to unnaturally large litters and piglets being crushed to death by the weight of their hormone-injected mothers. They’ve genetically modified the natural breeding process of cows, forcing them to give birth to twins or even triplets when they usually bear one calf at a time, resulting in weakened and deformed calves. Plus, they’ve conducted inhumane tests on young lambs by leaving them in open fields during severe weather, and even in the presence of predators, just to see if they could survive without human help.
What’s more, the callous ‘experiments’ are being conducted in an effort to help the beef, pork and lamb industries make up for lost consumer interest in its products, as many people are taking an interest in alternatives like poultry, and turn a higher profit. Worse yet, it’s supported by U.S. taxpayer funds. Also, laws protecting animals from genetic manipulation to create ‘super livestock’ does not apply to farm animals, both in agricultural research and in on-farm production.
This kind of cruelty is wildly appalling and totally out of line with ethical standards and modern morality. While a world comprised of vegetarians and vegans is improbable, those that choose to eat meat should not be forced to consume genetically modified, scientifically altered and inhumanely treated livestock. The ignorance of meat production must end now.
Sign the petition to urge President of the USDA, Tom Vilsack, to halt experiments and cruel treatment of livestock at USMARC and invest in humane alternatives to livestock research.
Dear Tom Vilsack,
It has recently come to my attention that the USDA’s meat animal research center is responsible for horrible atrocities against defenseless animals, all in the name of profit. Cows are giving birth to deformed calves, pigs are so heavily injected with hormones that they are breeding mammoth-sized litters, and lambs are being subjected to excruciating deaths during inhumane experiments.
The agricultural system in this country is desperately in need of an overhaul. Striving to produce livestock that’s bigger, breeds more and grows faster, with no regard for their pain, is harmful not only to them but to consumers as well. Hormone-laden and genetically modified meats have been proven to spark chronic, degenerative diseases in humans.
I urge you to put an end to the cruel and unusual treatment of livestock at USMARC and invest in more humane ways to conduct animal testing. With great advancements in technology, there is no need for the callous ‘experiments’ being carried out at USMARC. Coupled with heightened consumer sensibility and morality, the existence of a cruelty free agricultural system could be upon us.
