Target: Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Union Council
Goal: Applaud efforts to minimize the unnecessary killing of dolphins, sharks and other marine creatures by banning drift net fishing
Protecting diverse marine life from harm is extremely important for the future health of our oceans. The European Union (EU) recently introduced a measure that would ban drift nets in EU waters. If this ban is passed by a collective agreement then massive amounts of sea life will be spared wrongful deaths.
Drift nets are responsible for outrageous amounts of “by-catch” every year, unnecessarily killing non-commercial animals like dolphins and sharks. Drift nets catch everything unfortunate enough to swim into them, killing many animals by entanglement. The capacity of these nets to trap and kill everything in their path threatens sensitive ecosystems and is a direct threat to sustainable fisheries.
If passed, the proposed ban on drift nets within EU waters and on vessels would protect delicate marine life and their ecosystems–which rely heavily on the survival of predators like dolphins, sharks and swordfish. The ban will also send a clear message to irresponsible fishermen: such desolation of sea life will not be tolerated, and will instead be punishable by law. Applaud this bill’s evolution and encourage the EU to pass it in to law without delay.
Dear Mr. Van Rompuy,
It is my understanding that a member of the EU recently introduced a bill that would ban the use of drift nets in EU waters. I am writing to express my full support for this measure. If it were to pass the lives of thousands of marine mammals, other crucial predator species and their ecosystems would be spared.
Drift nets are responsible for unreasonable amounts of by-catch which are useless to fishermen and the economy. The by-catch is however useful to ocean ecosystems which depend on the predators to sustain complex food webs. If this ban were approved marine life such as sharks, tuna, swordfish and dolphins would be spared untimely and senseless deaths. There is also the potential for your actions to inspire other nations to similarly end the barbaric use of drift nets, thus increasing international commitment to keeping sea life safe.
I applaud the development of this measure, Mr. Van Rombuy, and urge you and the other members of the EU committee to work swiftly to pass this bill into law. Your oceans deserve this protection and are in desperate need of it.
