Protect and Conserve Rare Welsh Spider Species

Target: Lesley Griffiths, Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Wales

Goal: Protect crucial and rare Welsh spiders by ensuring the conservation of their habitats.

Several rare species of spider in Wales, many of which are found nowhere else in the world, were found to be at risk of critical endangerment in a review conducted by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and the British Arachnological Society. The NRW called them “crucial to the environment,” and said that “this assessment highlights the need to take action to prevent further extinctions of our rarest species.”

Nearly 500 of the 654 species of spider in the U.K. are found in Wales. Of those, 84 are endangered or vulnerable, and 18 are already critically endangered. Some of the rare species included on the list are cave spiders from south Wales and sand running spiders that live on beaches and dunes. These sand spiders don’t build webs, but actively chase down their prey. According to NRW’s senior reserve manager, “These sand dunes we’ve got in Wales now are some of the key habitats for them. They require open sandy conditions where they can actively, visually hunt their prey. They get rarer as the habitats get rarer.” Sign below to demand the conservation of these spiders and their habitats.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Cabinet Secretary Griffiths,

Wales’s rare species of spider, which the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) describes as “crucial” to their environment and which often cannot be found anywhere else in the world, must be protected. The NRW, in conjunction with the British Arachnological Society, conducted a review and determined that action must be taken now if many of these species are to spared from extinction.

Some of these rare species are cave-dwellers that live their whole lives underground, and sand spiders that run across the dunes to hunt their prey. Their habitats must be conserved — as these habitats get rarer, so do the spiders themselves. I urge you to ensure the survival of these spider species by conserving their habitats.

Sincerely,

  1. MUST SAVE THE RARE WELSH SPIDERS.

  2. We are connected, the extinction of one is the extinction of the other

  3. I`m scared to death of spiders but WE MUST PREVENT EXTINCTIONS. It`s a huge shame that there aren`t many signings or comments, and assume it`s just because spiders aren`t cute and cuddly….so come on people, you`re better than this
