Support Ending Puppy Mills

Target: Cape Elizabeth, Maine Representative Kimberly Monaghan

Goal: Ban the sale of dogs and cats in Maine pet stores

Pet stores in Maine may soon be prohibited from selling cats, kittens, dogs and puppies. A Maine representative, Kimberly Monaghan, has introduced a bill that will prohibit the sale of these animals in the state. Monaghan’s intentions are to eliminate puppy and kitten mill operations in areas where they are commonplace. This bill would also help animals in shelters find forever homes and stop irresponsible backyard breeders from continuing their breeding operations.

Monaghan is sponsoring this bill on behalf of Maine Friends of Animals, an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of all animals. Maine only contains four pet stores; those who object to this bill worry that business will severely decrease for the four shops if the bill becomes law.

One Maine pet-shop owner, Bryant Tracy, insists that he only sells animals from reputable, Department of Agriculture-licensed breeders. However, there is no guarantee that the other shops source humanely. Nonetheless, puppy and kitten mills rely on pet stores to make profits. In order to stop these inhumane breeding operations, pet stores must stop selling susceptible animals.

Pending approval, Maine would be the first state to ban the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. This would be a monumental step towards similar bans in other states and the end of pet mills. Sign this petition to inform Monaghan that you support ending the sale of dogs and cats in Maine pet stores.

Dear Rep. Monaghan,

You recently devised a bill that, if successful, will ban the sale of dogs and cats in Maine pet stores, thus helping end inhumane puppy and kitten mills around the country. I am writing to show my support for this bill as well as to thank you for your leadership on this issue.

If “An Act to Prohibit the Sale of Dogs and Cats in Pet Stores” passes into law, Maine will be the first state in the country to outlaw the sale of such animals in pet stores. This is a monumental step towards ending puppy and kitten mill operations around the country. I am also in support of encouraging those looking for a companion animal to adopt rather than shop.

I sincerely hope your measure is successful. The domestic animals of Maine would greatly benefit from the implementation of this bill. Please continue to fight for the cats and dogs of your state.

  1. I hope that I am here to see the end of the puppy mill manufacturing in all 50 states. It is a deplorable way bring puppies into this world. Out of the respect for animals and kindness to creatures that live on this earth I will not support these despicable animal pet farms. This is where all the abuse happens, and this is where it should end!
