Save the Regal Fritillary

Target: Jim Kurth, Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Protect regal fritillary butterflies from extinction.

The regal fritillary species of butterfly has been declining steadily for the past 40 years due to habitat loss. These butterflies are very picky about their habitat, their only larval food being prairie violets, and they suffer when their territory is infringed upon by trees and other wildlife. The species is currently under consideration for federal endangered status, a sad change from a time when these butterflies were as common as the monarch.

Butterflies are very important to the ecosystem. Alongside bees, they are among the chief pollinators of plant life, and serve as pest control by eating smaller and more intrusive insects. This is only a fraction of the benefits they provide to the world, and their loss would negatively impact us as a whole. This particular species is also an indicator of prairie health, just as other butterflies indicate the status of their natural habitats.

Currently, efforts are being made in prairie restoration and the planting of violets to help keep this species afloat, and we must support these endeavors in addition to ensuring they qualify as a protected endangered species. Sign this petition to ensure that the regal fritillary will thrive once again.

Dear Director Kurth,

The regal fritillary butterfly is on a steady decline despite many efforts to replenish the species. Habitat loss is the main culprit, as prairies are disappearing along with the violets the species’ larval stage feeds from. Butterflies as a whole are vital to our ecosystem, for both pollination and pest control, and we cannot let a single species even come close to dying out.

This species is currently under consideration for federal endangerment status, and there are efforts being made in prairie restoration as well as the planting of violets. You must support these endeavors and help us keep this species alive. The regal fritillary must thrive again, to keep our environment stable.
