Save Kiwi Birds from Extinction

Target: David Parker, Minister for the Environment, New Zealand

Goal: Use humane predator control measures and habitat restoration to prevent kiwi birds from going extinct.

Recent studies reveal that New Zealand’s five species of kiwi birds are slowly going extinct. The reasons cited for their decline include introduced predators, stray dogs and cats, and ongoing habitat destruction. As a result, it is believed that while 200 years ago there were millions of the birds residing in New Zealand, there are now less than 70,000 of them remaining.

Kiwis are nocturnal, flightless birds that are vulnerable to attack from predators that are also active at night, such as invasive stoats or feral cats. This, combined with the threat of deforestation, has led to the grim fact that only five percent of all kiwi chicks that hatch will survive to adulthood. Without further intervention, experts say that kiwi birds may be extinct in as little as 50 years.

Current protection measures for kiwis rely mainly on the inhumane trapping and poisoning of predatory species. We must expand protections to address other threats, such as habitat destruction and attacks by household pets, and use more humane alternatives for pest control. Sign this petition to demand that New Zealand expand its conservation efforts to ensure that the kiwi bird has a future in this island nation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Parker,

Kiwis are in danger of extinction in New Zealand as the result of a number of human-introduced threats, including invasive predatory species and habitat destruction. While current measures to control predators through the use of poison or trapping may protect some chicks, these methods are inhumane and do not go far enough. More must be done to promote reforestation and educate the public on ways to keep wildlife safe from pets, such as keeping cats indoors and not allowing dogs to roam freely off-leash in protected areas.

Unless all causes for the kiwis’ population decline are addressed, it is very likely that these birds will go extinct in as little as 50 years. Therefore, we demand that you take a comprehensive approach and focus on all humane ways to help save these unique and iconic birds.

Sincerely,

  1. MUST SANE THE KIWI BIRDS FORM EXTINCTION NOW.

  2. Humane methods ! – I hope so, but knowing the way brain dead bureaucrats think I wouldn’t lay odds on it. A prime example was the way the Scottish environment agency, in conjunction with the RSPCA, initially dealt with the hedgehogs in the Scottish Islands (mass slaughter).

  3. WE REALLY SHOULD BE SO PROUD OF OURSELVES, MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATURES WILL BE GONE SOON ALL DOWN TO THE HUMAN BEING, I AM ASHAMED TO BE ONE.

Saving the kiwis by inflicting pain on other species is not the way to go! please use humane methods.
