Target: Kevin Shea, Administrator of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services
Goal: Bring criminal charges and revoke the breeding license of Thomas D. Morris Inc. for severe animal welfare violations
A recent investigation into the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) inspection records has revealed terrible violations by one particular company. Thomas D. Morris, Inc., a breeder of cows, goats, and pigs in Reisterstown, Maryland, has been found to have committed several serious cases of animal neglect, transgressing the Animal Welfare Act numerous times. Sign this petition to pressure the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to issue severe penalties to Thomas D. Morris, Inc., and to revoke its breeding license.
The in-depth investigation into the USDA’s records, conducted by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, shows that animal welfare was completely ignored by the company in multiple cases. Some examples in the inspection reports show that animals with fevers, swellings, and lame legs were denied veterinary care and even basic shelter. Another case details 15 obviously sick sheep, unshorn in 96.5 degree heat. There are several more violations, all of which point to a complete lack of regard for animal welfare by the company.
So far, no punishment has been issued by authorities. It is time to make sure that the violations of the Animal Welfare Act by Thomas D. Morris are finally met with justice. Many animals have suffered at the hands of this company. If it cannot take proper care of its animals, the company should have its breeding license revoked and be given adequate penalties for the suffering it has caused.
Sign this petition to persuade the head of the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to revoke Thomas D. Morris’ breeding license, and to issue severe penalties for the company’s disregard of animal welfare in order to save more animals from suffering.
Dear Mr. Shea,
I am writing in regard to the recent Animal Legal Defense Fund investigation into the Animal Welfare Act violations made by Thomas D. Morris, Inc. in Reisterstown, Maryland. Detailed reviews of the USDA’s inspection records have shown several serious cases of animal neglect. I ask that you take action against this company for its obvious lack of regard for the animals in its care.
The company has been found to have denied shelter and veterinary care to many animals—some of whom were obviously sick—including 15 unshorn sheep who became ill because of 96.5 degree temperatures, animals with fevers, and a goat who could not bear weight on her back leg. The full list of violations is far more extensive, but it all points to the company’s total apathy toward animal suffering.
Thomas D. Morris, Inc. has clearly failed to properly care for the animals in its charge. I ask that you issue federal punishments for its violations, move injured and mistreated animals to shelters where they will be looked after, and revoke Thomas D. Morris’s breeding license so this cruelty will not happen again.
