Applaud Major Retailer for Ending Ivory Sales

Applaud Major Retailer for Ivory Ban

Target: Mr. Yu Kwok Chun, Chairman and Managing Director of Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium Ltd.

Goal: Thank Mr. Yu Kwok Chun and his company for ending their import and sale of ivory products

There is some good news in the world. A major retailer based in Hong Kong has announced that they will completely cease sales of ivory products. This makes Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium Ltd. the third major retailer in Hong Kong to ban ivory sales—an excellent sign for conservation efforts worldwide.

Yue Hwa joins Chinese Arts & Crafts and Wing On Department Store as the latest large retailer in Hong Kong to ban ivory products this year. According to the company, Yue Hwa stopped selling the products on May 7, the same afternoon they received a call from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Legislative Councilmember Elizabeth Quat who urged them to stop selling ivory.

The news of this announcement is especially encouraging given the fact that the three aforementioned retailers were the largest sellers of ivory in Hong Kong. A statement from the Yue Hwa told the press: “Our company realized the trend of protecting endangered species in the society; we respect and agree with the will of the general public to protect these animals.”

The illegal poaching of elephants for their tusks is perhaps the greatest threat to the species’ survival. As major retailers join international conservation efforts the demand for ivory continues to shrink. Thank Yue Hwa for stopping the sale of ivory products in its store and therefore aiding the conservation of these beautiful animals.

Dear Mr. Yu Kwok Chun,

I write to you with sincere thanks for your decision to cease sales of ivory products in your store. Your company joins Chinese Arts & Crafts and Wing On Department Store—the two other largest sellers of ivory in Hong Kong—who have recently announced a cessation of ivory sales.

Elephant ivory is a valuable commodity, and only by stopping the demand for ivory can we hope to stop the illegal poaching of elephants that feeds the trade. In making this decision you are helping conserve one of the Earth’s most incredible and majestic animals.

I truly thank you for ending the sale of ivory in your store, and sincerely hope that more retailers are inspired by your actions to do the same. The more people who know about how their ivory comes to be, the more people we can persuade to boycott ivory altogether and save elephants from extinction.
