Save Tony the Tiger from Captivity

Save Tony the Tiger from Captivity

Target: Chuck Kleckley, Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives

Goal: Stop the passing of a Louisiana bill legalizing tiger captivity

A bill recently passed in the Louisiana senate that aims to create an ‘exemption’ to exotic big cat legislation. In essence, the bill’s aim is to appease a truck stop owner Michael Sandlin, who keeps a tiger called Tony in a cage as a gimmick to attract business. Sign this petition to ensure that this bill does not pass, and that the captivity of tigers remains illegal for everyone in Louisiana.

Tony the tiger has spent fourteen years of his life at ‘Tiger Truck Stop’ in Grosse Tete, Louisiana, caged as an attraction and subjected to the deafening noise of trucks day and night. Louisiana’s previous ban on the possession of dangerous wild animals resulted in a successful lawsuit against Michael Sandlin filed by the Animal Legal Defense Fund. Sandlin has received several sanctions from the United States Department of Agriculture for violations of the Animal Welfare Act and the Louisiana Court of Appeals found Sandlin’s possession of Tony to be illegal.

However, the new bill, SB 250, would create an exception for “certain persons” in Louisiana (meaning Michael Sandlin), and would make them exempt from Louisiana’s wild animal protection law.

Sign this petition to make sure that Tony the Tiger will not be caged for any longer and demand that he go to one of many wildlife sanctuaries who are more than willing to accommodate him.

Dear Mr. Kleckley,

I write with regards to bill SB 250, introduced to the Louisiana Senate by Senator Rick Ward. This bill seeks to create exemptions to “certain persons from the requirements of the big exotic cat rules.” In essence, this bill aims to let Michael Sandlin retain a caged tiger at his Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete even after losing a lawsuit from the Louisiana Court of Appeals. In this lawsuit, the captivity of his tiger, ‘Tony’, was found to be illegal—Sandlin has also received many sanctions from the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Tony the tiger has been a spectacle for drivers for fourteen years, and is caged day and night, subjected to the endless, raucous din of trucks. This bill is a disgusting attempt to subvert animal protection laws and continue the suffering of a beautiful wild animal. It cannot be allowed to pass through the House of Representatives.

I urge you to use your power as Speaker of the House to ensure this bill does not pass into law. If it does, it would ensure a lifetime of cruel captivity for Tony the tiger, and reverse the hard work of animal rights groups, leaving more animal rights open to weakening alterations.
