End Animal Suffering in Research Labs

Target: Emil Pollak, Director of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center

Goal: Stop the suffering of livestock for research

In an attempt to boost the agriculture industry, scientists at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska are genetically manipulating animals to yield more offspring and they are having some disturbing results. Pigs and cows are having double the size of their normal litters under the experiments, but the offspring are often sickly and deformed.

In an effort to develop “easy care” lambs that would not need shelter or the aid of shepherds, scientists have been using surgery and breeding techniques to force lambs to give birth in open fields where predators are abound. The ewes are suffering horrible deaths from the weather conditions, starvation from their mothers abandoning them, or coyotes taking advantage of their sickly stature. Out of the 580,000 animals the center has housed since 1985, at least 6,500 have starved. Veterinarians have been removing the bodies of dead ewes at an alarming rate.

These experiments are being performed under the taxpayer-financed institution called the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center and its only purpose is to help producers of beef, pork, and lamb yield a bigger profit. This means doing whatever it takes, even if that means letting animals suffer in order to make money. The Animal Welfare Act, enacted in 1966, was intended to prevent animal abuse at the hands of researchers. Unfortunately, the law has a loophole that does not cover the welfare of livestock in animal experimentation.

Animals are suffering so that the agricultural industry can make money. There has not been a huge outcry because people are largely unaware of what is going on at research centers such as this. Please sign the petition below to urge the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s director, Emil Pollak, to end these cruel practices.

Dear Mr. Pollak,

The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s goal is to increase the profit for producers of beef, pork, and lamb. However, this goal has come at a very unjust price. The cruelty that livestock are being subjected to in the institution’s experimentation is animal abuse and needs to be stopped.

Pigs are being genetically manipulated to have twice as many piglets, and many are crushed when the mother rolls over. Lambs are being forced to give birth in dangerous conditions where predators are prevalent. Many ewes are abandoned by their mothers and left to starve or be subject to the harsh weather conditions. Veterinarians are removing the bodies of these animals at an alarming rate, and this is not something that taxpayers should be forced to fund.

Please end the abusive treatment of the animals at your institution. The inhumane treatment of these animals is not worth the potential profit that would come from it.
