Stop Silencing Animal Welfare Advocates With ‘Ag-Gag’ Law

Target: Kim Reynolds, Governor of Iowa

Goal: Don’t prohibit employees and animal rights advocates from exposing abuse on factory farms.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have filed a lawsuit in the state of Iowa to overturn a so-called ‘ag-gag’ law that has existed for the past five years. The groups state that the law is unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment rights of would-be whistleblowers looking to expose animal abuse and inhumane working conditions on factory farms.

Under the current legislation, it is illegal to film, photograph or make audio recordings at agricultural facilities, making it difficult to report abuse or bring abusers to justice. This law must be repealed. As agricultural industry giants are fighting hard to prevent allegations of abuse from going public, we must do what we can to make sure that those who cause harm to animals are not protected under the law.

At this time, similar ‘ag-gag’ laws exist in nine other states in the U.S., with many other states currently in the process of drafting similar proposals. This troubling trend must be brought to an end. Sign the petition below to demand that the governor of Iowa support the overturning of this potentially unconstitutional law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Reynolds,

It is highly likely that animal abuse and inhumane working conditions are going unreported in your state, perhaps for years at a time, thanks to a law that has existed on Iowa’s books since 2012. The so-called ‘ag-gag’ law is a violation of the First Amendment rights of employees and animal rights advocates alike, as it makes it a criminal offense to take photographs or make any kind of recording at agricultural facilities, such as slaughterhouses. This law protects potential and current abusers, and poses a threat to animals, agricultural employees and public safety as a whole.

More protections are needed for animals and the public, not less. We, the undersigned, demand that this dangerous law be overturned and that you do what you can to ensure that it is repealed.

Sincerely,

  1. This type of unbelievable bullshit is so screwed on so MANY levels that it is incomprehensible (in my mind anyways) that it is actually written down somewhere!! For the love of God! Who in their right mind condones animal cruelty? Because that is EXACTLY what this FUCKED UP order is!! Ridiculous and disgusting!!

  2. Cynthia Mattera says:

Instead of arresting these kind people who are showing the truth, what goes on behind closed doors, why don’t you arrest the people who are committed crimes against helpless confined animals!

  3. This bullshit is happening here in Australia too.
Why are these animal abusers protected? ???
What the fuck is that about?

The horrors inflicted every day on farm animals is appalling.
I see them transported in heavy traffic, terrified of these unfamiliar sights & sounds on their way to their death. I say a prayer for them, with tears in my eyes.

I pray their death is quick. It’s not always the case though …. so many sadists working at the slaughterhouses, so many incidents of suffering documented. Totally Unacceptable.

  4. Why are the animals allowed to suffer, yet the animal abusers are protected??? That’s just wrong

  5. Kathy Khoshfahm says:

Kim – You are aware that undercover video is the only way to expose animal cruelty in slaughterhouses. The Ag-Gag Law is ridiculous and and it was the almighty dollar that got it passed. Please show the world that you are against animal torture by using your power and position to overturn this law immediately. Millions of animals are counting on you to do the right thing here…

  6. Eugene W Sengstake Jr says:

Just the existence of ag-gag laws – not to mention the number of new laws evidently now in the works – makes it clear that there is a lot of cruelty going on behind the scenes that the industry and their “pocketed” politicians do not want publicized. I have to wonder if people are totally ignorant of what is happening or if they simply don’t care – otherwise there would be more outrage about this cruelty. Maybe we need more activists in the field so that the abusers know that no matter what the “law” – they are not going to get away with their inhumane treatment of animals – – –

  7. Governor Reynolds, this is despicable THIRD WORLD cruelty! Just because these animals cannot speak they have a right to humane treatment by us their caregivers. AG-GAG is preposterous, why you would allow immense cruelty behind closed doors will show your true colors. It’s a choice, BIG MONEY or the humane treatment of innocent animals!

  8. This ag-gag is a big narrow minded mistake! LISTEN to these people! You are doing yourselves no good at all by ignoring the heinous cruelty which is going on unchecked in Iowa and other places. Undercover videos are necessary to show people what is going on- have you watched any or do you not care- you would rather bow to the great god ‘money’? You are proving yourselves well behind the modern world- show compassion-look at what it means and join 2017
