Target: Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald
Goal: Denounce the Wisconsin Senate for failing to pass a bill that would have banned the use of dogs in wolf hunting
Wisconsin legislators recently killed a bill that would have criminalized the use of dogs in wolf hunting. Wisconsin is currently the only state that still allows this inhumane practice. The dogs used in these hunts are frequently killed by wolves, or else are seriously injured and then abandoned by their owners.
Wolf hunting was illegal in Wisconsin for many years because there were so few wolves living in the state. Without government protection hunters would have pushed the species into extinction. Wisconsin’s wolf population eventually grew to the point where the state deemed it necessary to allow annual hunting periods to help stabilize their numbers. While many other states allow wolf hunting for similar reasons, none permit the use of dogs.
Wisconsin hunters can use up to six dogs to hunt wolves during the appropriate season. They attach tracking devices to their dogs’ collars and release them to track and trap wolves for their owners to then shoot dead in cowardly fashion. Wolves frequently fight back when being tracked by hunting dogs, often killing or severely injuring them. These dogs do not deserve to be terrorized and mauled by ferocious wolves. Hunters should be prohibited from subjecting their animals to such horrid experiences.
In 2013 several Wisconsin State Senators introduced a bill intended to ban the use of dogs during wolf hunts. Unfortunately the bill was recently killed leaving the state’s hunting dogs in harm’s way. Let Wisconsin’s legislators know that you denounce their tacit embrace of animal cruelty, and call on them to end the use of dogs in wolf hunts once and for all.
Dear Senator Fitzgerald,
I was disheartened to hear that you recently failed to pass SB 93, a bill meant to prevent people from using dogs to hunt wolves. Wisconsin is the only state that still allows this practice. Hunting dogs frequently have to fight the wolves they are forced to track. Many dogs are maimed or killed and others abandoned by their owners to suffer and die alone in the woods. No living creature should be subjected to such brutalities.
Your failure to pass SB 93 equates to a tacit approval of animal cruelty and animal abuse. You have allowed for the continued mauling and slaughter of dogs for sport. I must insist that you and your colleagues in the Wisconsin Senate work to immediately end this barbaric practice.
